TOPIC: Treacy

Morgan Treacy 1 month 3 weeks ago #1

I’m really curious where his career goes from here. I wasn’t as bullish on him as some were last year, mostly because he’s not really big or fast for his position and his hands can be a little hard. That said, I did think it was silly to throw big money and picks to land someone like Logan McDonald when Treacy could competently play the second/third tall role for a lot less money.

I sort of had him pegged as like a Josh Jenkins type at Adelaide (but shorter). Useful, maybe plays 150 games as a second or third option, but that’s about it.

Is he better than that? He’s only 21 and if he has another gear to get to he’s going to be very good. Some of the contested marks he took on Saturday were both elite and timely. It’s still early in the season, but he’s gone from 3.4 marks a game to 5.7. That’s huge. If an opposition coach has to worry about Amiss, Jackson and Treacy, then Treacy is probably getting the third defender (at least in height). There’s a chance that we have two key forwards in Amiss and Treacy where you feel pretty comfortable when they are shooting for goal. Has that every happened before?

It’s exciting.

In the word "dysfunctional" is the word "functional" and as Jezzzzaaaarghhh just elaborated, is our forward line...

Key talls forward: Amiss, Treacy and Voss with Jackson going forward during rotations.

expat, love your phonetic spelling there.

a thing of beauty it would be, to regularly kick 15 goals a game eh

Well, I wish he was 5cm taller and had softer hands against Carlton. Apart from that, sign him up for 10 years.

I must confess to being a critic of Josh Treacy, in spite of his youth, because he missed so many contested marks prior to this season. The five contested marks he took against the Bulldogs were decisive factors in our win, and his game has risen to an elite level. It's all very well to criticise our ball movement into the forward line, but we often fail to score because no-one has (or had) the ability to take a contested mark ( apart from the odd ones to Jackson and Amiss). The same goes for our clearances from defence - ironically, poor old Tabs was the only person who could regularly take a contested mark on the wing for us a couple of years ago, and I recall he was ranked highly in the AFL for that stat.
Sorry to bore you, and state the obvious, but so far this season contested marks have played a significant role in Freo's wins/losses. In our four wins we have totalled 34 to 29 for the opposition, while in our three losses we totalled 20 to 46. We have a total of 54, of which Treacy has14 (next best Jackson 6). By comparison, Geelong has so far taken 71.
It's certainly a significant area for improvement for Freo and Treacy's leading the way.

Treacy's improvement is of no surprise to me. Don't forget what a lovely kick he is either. And he appears to bleeds purple.

Yes, extend his contract; now is the absolute best moment we could do it. The longer the better.

If Tabs could have taken any of the marks he did on the wing in the fwd 50 he'd have been twice the player, but alas it has not been the case. He appears to overthink it once the potential mark will lead to a scoring shot. It seemed obvious to me he needed some sort of zen coach years ago.

I’ve been a fan of Treacy since he was drafted, I just love his attack on the ball and the opposition players. I have always hoped he turn into the player he has, still sone improvement points but I’m happy with where he’s at.

No need to throw away our first round draft picks for a key forward at this point.

Treacy’s emergence is thrilling to witness.

And scary for the rest of the comp when you consider he’s still only 21.

One thing I’ve noticed is he seems to enjoy taking shots for goal.

His form must be rewarded with a good contract.

I reckon we have the foundation of the best forward line in Freo’s history, and we’ll go on to make history before long.

I'm really liking how our forward line is developing and I really do think we should abandon the McDonald quest and load up at the draft. Also new draftees are cheaper which will allow us to give better deals to our established and developing star players as well as our reliable role players like Bailey Banfield

I’d like to say I’m pleasantly surprised, but as a fan of the Big Cohuna aka Cyclone Treacy since his first game - I’m not.

He's still only 21.

This would have been his first full pre season.
