TOPIC: Optus Turf

Morgan Optus Turf 1 month 3 weeks ago #1

The turf at other grounds in Australia seems to be able to handle the odd concert over the summer, but once again the Optus turf was in pretty poor shape last night. Players were losing their footing all over the place.

It’s been in the mid-20s and sunny for the nearly two months since the last concert. If they can’t get the ground in reasonable shape in those conditions then what’s going on?

The commentary on Fox was it was dew making it a very slippery surface.

Dew my arse.

Dew forms after sunset as temperatures drop.

How about a tiny bit of dew on the crap Optus surface made an ice rink of the playing field.

I still recall Shane and Morgan going at it over surface hardness many years ago. Stuff of legend it was. I've never looked at a park the same since.

Pavlich said there was no dew and conditions were warm and perfect. On Fox.

Dew doesn't make clods of mud with a bit of grass on top hack out of the ground with footy boots.

That's freshly laid turf that hasn't taken root properly, or turf with rotten roots from overwatering and overshading.

Imagine having to overuse sprinklers because a major sponsor unfetteredly contributes to a changing climate with less rain. Boom!

Someone has said it before, why do they play down the interchange wing 8 out of 10 times when that side has the crappiest turf conditions.

Yep, you could clearly see the different squares of turf on the field.

"That's freshly laid turf that hasn't taken root properly"- correct, as Merc has also re-iterated, it was obviously shifting below players feet, took a while for a few of our guys to adjust. And the ground was looking quite dry and sandy/patchy in places close to us on the northern wing as well.

Not to relitigate matters, but if memory serves my argument was that it was possible that the newly laid surfaces at Cockburn and Optus might have contributed to our wretched run with soft tissue injuries. I think Shane thought I was a luddite because I questioned the veracity of the most sacred of soil compaction tools, the penetrometer.

We all know he’s been in the pocket of Big Agritools since way back.

I’d note that when West Coast moved to Lathlain they also suffered a wretched run of soft tissue injuries. It’s probably a coincidence. I’m just asking questions!

But yes, the Optus turf is reminiscent of Docklands in the early 2000s, and it looks like the parquet of the Boston Garden. I makes me wonder how long it takes players to adjust from the very consistent lawn bowls green at Cockburn to the very uneven Optus turf. I took a tour of Optus Stadium once, and they said that the two wings have completely different climatic conditions. It seemed a bit overdramatic, but once I heard that, it’s actually really noticeable.

Commentators were talking about Ed Langdon only playing on the Shane Warne stand wing of the MCG. The theory was that he didn’t need to be interchanged, so he stayed on the far wing. I wonder whether we should keep Sharp running on the Northern wing where it’s drier and keep a mudder like Brayshaw or Aish on the Southern wing?

And no, I’m not reading into this way too much.

Growing lawn in the shade is not easy. People also get things wrong sometimes. Nuance sometimes. Fundamentals other times. Like north and south.
