TOPIC: Is Driz the biz?

Sloby Is Driz the biz? 1 month 2 weeks ago #1

Great to see Driz and Chappy are due to return to footy with Peel this week.

After their performances in 2022 I had them inked in as starting members of Freo’s 2025 premiership team.

However, both have succumbed to injury since then, and I’m left wondering, are they going to reach their expected heights?

Driz looked a shadow of his 2022 version when he played last year. Perhaps he was hampered by injury?

And I truly hope Chappy can get a good run at it this time, although I’m not sure if he’s better positioned in defence or on the wing...

Good luck to them both and go Freo!

The wing position is cursed at Freo. Jlo trying to shift CamMac to the wing killed his career; Hill, Langdon, Acres and Henry all decided they'd prefer to play elsewhere than on a wing for us, Drizzy and Chapman can't get a run at it with injury.

Hughes can count himself lucky that he was asked to play on the wing and the worst thing that happened to him was that he sucked at it and went back to defence.

Now poor Brayshaw has been asked to spend long periods on the wing, and if you ask me he's too important to curse like that.

I see Chapman will make his way to defence as he gets up to match speed. If I were him, I think I'd politely ask to stay there. Drizzy should ask to play as a high half forward, even if it's in name only.

JLo isn't afraid to try new things like getting (almost) grown men to sing Taylor Swift songs in front of their peers, but for Jeremy Sharp's sake I think he should ask someone to perform smoking ceremony to cleanse the Freo wings of bad spirits.

Hmm, I didn’t realise JLo was so out there with his coaching methods. Perhaps his taste in music has something to do with losing players we’d rather keep?

Anyway, if our core midfield group (not including wing specialists) consists of Fyfe, Brayshaw, Serong, Young, Johnson, and maybe Jackson when Darcy returns, then I guess we have to find a spot for them somewhere other than on the ball.

But I take your point out the apparent curse of the wing…surely there’s a shaman or two still lurking around Freo somewhere we can get in to perform the rites?

I’m pretty sure he wasn’t a shaman, but maybe the former astrologist for the Freo local paper can point us in the right direction? I think his name was Sudhir.

Because if we don’t sort out the wings, we won’t raise the cup anytime soon!

Purple Shades
Sloby, do you not expect either of them to make our 2024 premiership team, or did you not expect us to win the 2024 premiership?

I predicted we'd win out first in 2025 a while ago, but I be very happy to be proven wrong.

Maybe we'll go back to back?

Raglan Matt
Morgan, I think you are drawing a long bow in blaming JL for the demise of Cammac.

I would sing Taylor Swift songs but as you all know, I stay up too late and have nothing in my brain.

Well that's what you people say.

That may be so RM, but Morgan makes a good point about the problems we've had with the wing position for a while now.

I sure hope Sharp continues his vein of good form and locks one down at least.

As for the other, rotating through our midfield group might not be such a bad option.

PS: I hope Cam Mac's doing better these days.

Cam kicked 1.6 goals a game as a 24 year old on a team that struggled to score. JLo saw that and asked him to train to play on the wing, he lost a heap of weight, Jlo gave him one game and he never played again.

There might be more that went on behind the scenes, but it’s hard to mount an argument that Jlo maximised his talent.

I thought the Shaman was on the roof playing the guitar?

Not to knit-pick, Morgan, but the never playing again had nothing to do with his footballing ability or wing position.
