TOPIC: Hamling

Interesting article on the afl website where hamling goes into some detail as to why he left.

I think it help explains why we have lost some depth players and some best 22 ie Blake and Lachie to name a few.

Hopefully with Peter bell now away from dealing with player contracts the disrespect those players have felt can be reduced.

I disagree. Hamling was on huge money when we traded for him to come over and played 6 games in the last 3 years. He's been paid a massive amount to effectively sit on the sidelines or play at Peel. He's 30 and not in the best 22 so should be on a minimum contract, that's the expectation for someone who can't get their body right and even when they do, isn't in our starting line-up.

Feeling disrespected by that is more a reflection of Joel than the contract offered to him.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Bell is very transactional. He views these things as wins or losses. If you look at what would have kept Acres, Henry and Hamling its peanuts.

"I don't feel 30. I feel like I can run like an eighteen-year-old still."

Someone needs to explain to Joel the complexities of the ageing athlete.

Joel, you're 30. It has been determined by a complex mathematical equation (2023 - 1993 = 30)
Joel, you're not 18. Ask a young lady born in 2005, if she thinks you're her age. Anticipate a brutal response.
Joel, every year, you age one year. Life's a bitch. Eventually you die.

Realistically, the club supported Joel through a potentially career ending injury to his ankle that has stopped him playing for the majority of the last 3 years, all the while paying him big money. He should be far more grateful for what he has and the support offered to him rather than throwing sledges at Freo for offering him a 2 yr contract at 30 with a fragile body.

I expected better from Hamling.

I am not suggesting that freo should have offered more as he was not a priority.

But than you don’t counter offer when the swans offer a better contract. That simply makes freo look unprofessional.

You offer what you think is fair and if he gets better than see you latter. To counter offer with a much improved contract is totally unprofessional.
If you have dealt with staff in the corporate world like that you would not be a manager for very long.

There is still a professional and respectful way with dealing with peripheral employees and low balling their true worth and then counter offering is not one of them.

It is a pity that freo can’t see that and explains why we are not at best practise with staff retention.

They are called contract 'negotiations' for a reason. There is back and forth as to what is asked of each party in an effort to meet at a middle ground that sees both parties happy with the contract. It's standard practice throughout the football world let alone business world.

Freo didn't up the contract value from reports, just the security by offering a second year rather than a one year contract in a demonstration that the club wanted to keep hold of him. If Hamling wants to see that as disrespect then once again, it's on him and a reflection of his attitude. 2 years is incredibly generous.

It's also important to remember Colin Young is his manager and the person 'negotiating' for Hamling. That should tell you plenty on it's own.

Colin Young, have a look at how many of his clients are at their 2nd/3rd/4th clubs.
Also take note of which players take pot shots at their former clubs! All Young clients. The guy is worm tongued.

I wouldn’t have read too much into Hamling suggesting that he was “disrespected” if it wasn’t for Schultz using the same word. It’s hard not to disagree with Schultz and it now appears to be a problem that might extend to other players. Administrative arrogance isn’t a great way to build a great workplace culture.

I don't see how you could possibly knock Freo in this. At all. The guy has clearly swallowed some Colin Young rubbish on his way out the door and decided to throw barbs at his old club who paid him an exorbitant amount while he sat on the sidelines and still offered him a couple years to keep his career going.

It's a poor response from Hamling that has pushed me into boo'ing territory if he plays back in Perth next season. He's lost a lot of respect himself for his comments.

It seems like everyone acted rationally in how they approached the negotiations. What’s less clear is how Freo have managed relationships. Hamling used the word ‘disrespectful’, and I really hope that’s just a reflection of the offer on the page (which is how I read it), and not the manner it was delivered.

But even if it is the offer, the response the club elicits in making a ‘disrespectful’ offer compared to a ‘disappointing’ offer is stark. I don’t think the club (Bell?) has probably appreciated that difference enough. You can negotiate or walk-back a disappointing offer, but if a player feels disrespected then you’ve basically walked them out the door.

If this was a one-off then I would be in furious agreement with Bizkit, but there are some themes echoing with other players. Also, cast your mind back to how Bell used to manage trades; remember when he held a press conference to announce he was calling off the trade negotiations with Melbourne about Jesse Hogan? How he conducted himself was a bit embarrassing.

On Hamling being offended by the contract offer it's refreshing to hear Oscar McDonald interviewed in recent days. He doesn't see himself in the best 22 at this stage, he knows he'll have to work his guts out to get a gig and that he is 3rd or 4th in line for spot but he's just thankful to get the opportunity to have a spot on an AFL list again. And when he was fit and firing at Melbourne and Carlton he was a more than useful footballer.
Good to have him on board.
