Egg on the faces of All-Australian selection panel. No room for the Brownlow medallist.

Great performance by Caleb Serong. Came home strongly. Let's hope it's a good sign for next season.

Would have been his third if wacking people in the head was a suspendible offence for Carlton players.

So it's that time of the year where we question, on the eve of heading into trading everyone, what these f**k*n umpires are doing voting on the Brownlow Medal. Shane will put his It Ain't Broken Don't Fix It hat, kindly supplied by John Howard on.

But it is broken. You can't deny that. I'm not even referring to the winner, Tim Kelly polled two votes in a nine goal loss!

I didn't watch the count but I have managed to read the West Australian home page. Ben Cousins also won the Brownlow?

I don't understand how they continue to hype up the brownlow as the main individual award for the season, this resuilt has once again proven it is beyond a joke. Neale had his worst season in probably a decade, anyone who watched Brisbane regularly could tell you that. He was bang average and not in the conversation for the AA side let alone any of the coach or player based awards as the best for the season.

He received votes on so many occasions where he did little else but find 25 touches that weren't of any great help. Meanwhile players who did plenty would go unnoticed and this was a strong theme throughout the count. You can look at his game vs GWS where his 7 kicks (20 touches) and no real impact received 3 votes ahead of Charlie Cameron's 7 goals and Josh Kelly's 42 touches or Stephen Coniglio's 38 touches. It's simply a horrible system.

You could see it with all of Butters, Serong and Gulden receiving few if any votes in the first half of the season despite clear BOG performances before word of their efforts had been reported enough in the media that umpires began to notice and reward them with votes. Meanwhile, Cripps and JHF received so many undeserving votes just because of their reputation as big impact players rather than anything they really contributed on field.

It's a joke of an award.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I really hope Caleb Serong sees his own performance in the Brownlow, and the fact that a similar player in Neale won, as encouragement to take his game to an even higher level. He’s an absolute ripper.

I hope he doesn’t see Neale’s second Browlow and upcoming GF as an argument for asking for a trade when Freo misses the finals, chasing greener pastures when it suits rather than putting in the hard yards to help turn a club around.

Speaking of greener pastures, was it just my TV contrast, or does the Gabba have the greenest grass in the AFL? It's unnatural. I'm happy the WWE is bringing the squared circle to Optus in March, but I hope they get some better ground covers than they did for the Ed Sheeran concert. The ground looked awful for half the season.

The other issue with the Brownlow is that has become exclusively a midfielder's award (excluding now even the ruckmen). Always in the umpire's eye. Perhaps there should be awards for the best defender and best forward. I realize we have the Coleman for the highest goal scorer but they are often just receivers. But then again maybe that's too many awards. Don't play back or forward if you want to win a Brownlow.
Another issue is the 'fairest' part. You can be the best player by a long way but a 1 week suspension means you can't win the Brownlow.

Gary Lyon has put forward a brilliant defence, "it's always been a crappy system consisting of inexplicable voting ripping champions off", so what's the issue?

Morgan, I wouldn't say Serong is a similar player to Neale. He goes in harder inside, and when he get's the footy outside, he is much more direct.

Winning a Brownlow should have a required 'previously suspended' in the player bio IMHO.

It's probably those swallows that got the umpire attention in the last few rounds.
