He was one of those players that was stuck between the AFL and the seconds. Very capable in the latter but not good enough for the next level up. A bit like Crowden and some others. It must be a frustrating position to be in.

He gave it his best shot for us and played 78 AFL games at the highest level and that’s something a lot of aspiring players don’t do. Good luck to him in the GF for GC, I hope he walks away a winner.

Another one who was heavily influenced by RL in his development, it really shook his game. He started off as a natural ball winner and attacking player who was fast thinking and had footy smarts. However he quickly lost that and panicked with the footy, looking first backwards and sideways to take the easy option, hesitating and getting caught with the ball or rushing a poor disposal. It was really sad to see how he was influenced as a young player learning his craft.

He gave his all on the field and worked as hard as anyone out there, always willing to put his body on the line. It's not easy being an inside midfielder and that proved the case at GC behind a large number of them.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

If you think Will Brodie is doing it tough to get a spot in the team at the moment, spare a thought for Connor Blakely. He was a pure inside midfielder who was trying to break into a team with Fyfe, Mundy and Neale ahead of him!

I thought it was an interesting move to send him to half back, and while he won a fair bit of the ball there (he always had good hands and was steady over the ball), he probably didn't have the right combination of pace, skill or defensive prowess to make it work in a good team in defence.

He cracked a top 10 in the Doig at least once from memory, so he could obviously play. I reckon with another club he would have got a better run at it.

I agree, Biz, wrong place wrong time. He would go alright now, as that steady inside player, his hands were as good as anyone, marking and disposal. But Lyons insistence on moving the ball slowly by foot was not his go. Good bloke to go with it.

Not sure Ed Langdon would agree with your last comment RM.

That current St Kilda bloke who can’t be named because it’d be like mentioning the war sure didn’t have an adverse affect on David Mundy’s game and Blakely had Mundy to learn from so I’m not convinced the unnamed one can be held accountable for Blakely not making the grade.

My recollection is that Blakely had his chances but never quite impressed when he needed to, and poor disposal at times was one of his problems.

He was a good enough player. Lyon rated him highly. He lost a fair bit of meniscus in one of his knees all down hill from there.

Tragic, are they any more advanced in finding artificial replacement knee cartilage?

Supposedly cartilage keeps repairing and growing throughout life - that's why old fellas look like they morph into Disney characters with wingnuts way out of proportion to their heads.

Hi Hypen,
Research and trials into fixing up dodgy knees is ongoing. Rather than summarising all the options I will link to an article here. Hopefully not too esoteric.
The problem for sports people is that everything is long and complicated with extensive rehabilitation necessary. Results are not guaranteed, and the underlying advice is to reduce the risk or reinjury (ie retire). That is not the advice professional athletes wish to hear.
