There are fewer more recognizable names in footie than that of the great Ronald Dale Barassi! Think Ted Whitten, think Jack Dyer. He revolutionized what's now referred to as the midfield. The term ruck rover was inventive to describe how he played. Luke Jackson is a derivative of Barassi. Melbourne drops out of finals and the club with which Barassi was associated from his younger days and all those premierships in the 50s loses arguably its greatest player. Incredibly the team that put Melbourne out was the team that Barassi 'defected' to - Carlton and he gave Carlton a premiership.
RIP Ron Barassi.

Yep. Probably the most recognisable name in the game during the 60’s and 70’s. Larger than life.

And another name from the past passes on - Kevin 'Cowboy' Neale dies at 78. Was the principal goal kicker for the Saints in their only premiership in'66. Five goals.

If you ever get a chance watch Barassi's (2009) Season 2 episode of 'Who do you think you are?' on SBS. The bit where Ron learns specifics of his fathers passing from Diggers tending to his mortal wounds at Tobruk is some seriously gut-wrenching and emotional stuff.

Barrassi going to Sydney and turning them around changed everything for Sydney and for the National Competition. The Swans were terminal at that stage. Of all his staggering contributions to football that for me is his peak achievement.

Lost a good couple on the weekend. Cowboy Neale too. Kicked five in 1966 Grand Final. Vale.
