I think we do have less talent overall than many other teams, probably in our 2nd tier players. Our best are among the best, we just don't have enough of them. The loss of Cuthbertson, Houghton, Franklin, Cain (and Morrison 2 seasons with injury) is part of the cause. Most have chosen to leave after being developed at Freo. Perhaps you just get some of that with a diverse group and some wanting to try their hand in other states (or go to their lifetime favourite team-Franklin). Or is there something in the club culture? I am hearing (from one player relative) that Trent played favourites a lot and players didn't have a lot of faith in his game plan.
I think the other issue is the limited depth of talent in the state to cover two teams and the other team getting the top picks for several years now (unfortunately, probably deserved). That hasn't left much left over for us, which has seen us raiding the amateur leagues. I think this needs to be taken into account in any rules on player movement and/or draft access.
So, when you're short on talent your best bet is to play tight, defensive (ugly) football and look for breaks/counter-attack. I think that's where we're at - and not too bad at it.
Oh, and can someone help Tighe relearn how to mark! Getting her hands on a lot of balls, but can't hold on this year.
