I watched a couple of games over the weekend and while the overall skill level across the comp continues to improve, Freo appears to have been left well behind the pack. It’s early days and lots of teams recover after a bad game but it could be a long season. We desperately need some talent in the forward line.

Yes, we seem to be lagging behind many of the others. Today's game was frustrating to watch, we couldn't get the ball forward of centre for much of the match. All the ad-lib ball movement simply looks lame (in my view) and there's a lot of pointless effort that wears down the players and viewers alike.

I think we do have less talent overall than many other teams, probably in our 2nd tier players. Our best are among the best, we just don't have enough of them. The loss of Cuthbertson, Houghton, Franklin, Cain (and Morrison 2 seasons with injury) is part of the cause. Most have chosen to leave after being developed at Freo. Perhaps you just get some of that with a diverse group and some wanting to try their hand in other states (or go to their lifetime favourite team-Franklin). Or is there something in the club culture? I am hearing (from one player relative) that Trent played favourites a lot and players didn't have a lot of faith in his game plan.

I think the other issue is the limited depth of talent in the state to cover two teams and the other team getting the top picks for several years now (unfortunately, probably deserved). That hasn't left much left over for us, which has seen us raiding the amateur leagues. I think this needs to be taken into account in any rules on player movement and/or draft access.

So, when you're short on talent your best bet is to play tight, defensive (ugly) football and look for breaks/counter-attack. I think that's where we're at - and not too bad at it.

Oh, and can someone help Tighe relearn how to mark! Getting her hands on a lot of balls, but can't hold on this year.

I watched a bit of the game early on, when the Pies were well and truly on top. Then I watched the last quarter, and if I didn't know the score, I would have thought that Collingwood were some second rate team.

I think that maybe we went out without the physicality and intensity, letting the Pies take control. When we realised that we had to go as hard as they did - all was good.

Was that Adam Simpson I saw in the coaches box for the Eagles womens team?
They are now on target for a trio of wooden spoons, last in AFL, AFLW and WAFL. Now that would be something to show off in the entrance hall trophy cabinet at Eagles Central.
