#1 makes sense.

#2 makes no sense

#3 is nonsense

"the League aiming to simplify the game for officiating, minimising delays and reducing player exploitation of rules"
Could you imagine having to adjudicate at all over that Darcy Moore one, or worse, actually paying a 50 metre penalty for it?

Paying 50m because someone, who's exhausted from running around all afternoon, forgot that they had to stand in an imaginary zone is sure to make the life of an umpire much more pleasant.

Some umpires, anyway, Shane.

I get frustrated when players get pinged for actions that don’t impact on the game. E.g. a player who is simply running past an opponent who is about to take a free kick. If he doesn’t interfere with the play, let him go. Soccer made an adjustment to their offside rule to take into account non impact. We should do the same.

The only trouble is, WTB, some coaches will encourage players to test the umpires interpretation of "no impact on the game" and we will be back to where we started. The coaches are to blame for most of the rule changes we have seen since about 1980.

Yeah, but..

D'ya reckon the no encroaching into The Force aura proximity zone rule has improved all or any of playability, umpirability, watchability or scoringness of footy? The last two being the most important to me.

I can't recall ever sitting there thinking "this game stinks, if only they would stop blokes getting closer than 10 metres from someone standing there with the ball."

Those tweaks make sense to me. The ‘fake handball’ one is a no-brainer. The 25 second warning makes sense, because then you’re not asking a player to try and count to 15 in their head, they just need to get their skates on right away.

The stand / zone one is interesting and as RM points out is probably trying to stop player’s gaming the rule. It probably will only come up a few times in the early rounds, and then players will remember they either have to stand still or run away. No matter how tired they are that doesn’t seem that hard. To be honest, I thought that was already the rule; it’s basically just clarifying that running backwards from where you stood is the same as moving sideways.

But, if you look at the negative space of the big picture, isn’t this just confirming that substitution rule aside, there are no actual rule changes this year, which is what everyone always asks for?

Is a fake handball only when there’s no player to receive it?

How will they determine when a player genuinely thinks a handball is the thing to do, goes to handball, but then changes their mind to a perceived better option? I’ve seen plenty of times where a player shapes up to handball but then decide to play on or kick the ball.

Particularly if the man on the mark suddenly comes off the mark to intercept it

Is this like some sort of "Karen" view of onions at a Bunnings sausage sizzle?

The odd thing about #3 is the player needs to chose to "stand" before the umpire calls him to "stand". Which is sort of contrary to the "stand" rule in the first place.

I prefer the rule on fake handballs as it is. Until the umpire calls play on, or the player disposes of the ball, the player on the mark can't come off the mark. Harsh, but fair.
The only problem I have is when the player with the ball clearly runs off the line, but the umpire is slow to call it. In that case there should be no penalty, provided the umpire agrees that "play on" happened before the player left the mark.
