Wantaway sucks as a word, but there's not an elegant replacement.

For the record, I wish it was only 'trade week', but it's really 'trade weeks' now. It feels longer.

My kid loves Freo, and is only just old enough to understand the concept of players retiring and being traded. I had some paternal concern about his feelings being hurt with all the Freo players asking to leave when I saw what he did to poor David Mundy on his 2022 team poster. When I asked my son if he had crossed Dave out because he was upset about him retiring, he calmly told me that Mundy wasn't on the team any more, and to let him know when I heard about other players leaving so he could also cross them out.

It's the second cross over the heart that concerns me most. He's likely a sociopath. On the bright side, he'll probably have Peter Bell's job one day.

Sentimentality went out the window when the AFLPA (?) got rid of the Veterans concept, where you could pay a player like Mundy whatever you privately agreed and it would not count in the salary cap. You could field that player as often as you wanted (or not).

That way fans, club and player could contribute as long as they were able. I believe we had 211 on a veteran contract as basically the last example.

It’s the nature of the position. You need a winger or two who can run up and down a field for two hours to create and guard space. The number of humans who can run at that elite level and be elite ball users is small.

Your Stephen Hill types, who can run all day, hoof it a mile, and burn players off with acceleration are once-in-a-generation types. If you don’t have one of those, would anyone really notice the difference in contribution between Blake Acres and Darcy Tucker? You don’t tie up your cap for guys like that.

If they want to earn a decent wage and play for a winning team then great. I’ll defend them from people who criticise their ball use because their job is really hard. But if they want to chase more coin then I’d say good luck to them.

Close your eyes. Now imagine Blake Acres has the ball in hand at half back having received it from Young/Cox after an intercept. What do you see happening next? Be honest.

If it’s anything other than him standing there for two beats too long then ballooning it vaguely in the direction of a Freo player then you haven’t really been watching Blake Acres.
