TOPIC: Henry in, Banfield out

I don’t get it. The final lineup has just come out and we’ve got Henry as our medical sub. I don’t understand the logic for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, your medical sub should ideally be able to cover a number of roles because you shouldn’t know who is going to be injured (although this seems to have been “gamed “ by coaches in recent times). Bailey can clearly play across a number of positions while Liam is probably our least flexible player.
Secondly, if we are supposed to be rewarding form, how is Liam ahead of Bailey?

Pace , pace , pace.

I know what you are saying but Liam is more of a play maker and faster.

Though I think Liam needs to know ‘when to hold and when to fold’.
His tacking is definitely sub wafl let alone afl , but he can create and see opportunities other can’t.

I keep hearing about our pace but don't see us use or exploit it. Chip it around, wait wait wait, forward line is consequently so crowded there's no room to lead, so just bomb it in, gets run straight back out, rinse and repeat.

So we end up having to replace Tabs with Henry instead of Banfield. The dumb med sub selection left us exposed. Luckily it didn’t cost us.

Yes, ..but . GIven Henrys stagnated development, its probably not a bad spot for him at the moment.

Hits the game with fresh legs & impact, a bit like Richmond's use of Maurice Jr a couple of weeks ago. Might make Henry a bit 'hungrier for a spot as well...

I don't mind it, and I'd probably prefer Banfield in the team, rather than a sub.... Though, if they play like they did today, its hard to see Bailey getting a gig...

I appreciate the “fresh legs” aspect, but not the “impact”. He hasn’t really impacted a game to date. He may become a very good player in the future but he’s just not AFL ready at the moment. At this stage I’d rather see Wilson, Colyer or Crowden in the team before Liam.

Colyer, WTB?! He's done less than Henry this year and can't see him getting another game unless we get injuries.

Henry had 3 disposals when we needed him to have a real impact. He’s got potential but his year is next year.

Play someone as sub for the remaining games who is physically going to make a difference when the game is on the line.

I take your point re Colyer CA, but come 2022 finals I’d rather have his experience, strength and pressure than having Henry in the team (especially as a med sub). Better still, there are a few players ahead of them both.
As for 2023 - no Colyer and a bit more of Henry.

So how did that stupid decision play out for us?
Tabs out, Henry in. What the?
BRING IN BANFIELD forfriggssake.
As WTB said, he can cover a number of positions.

So....Richmond were fools putting Maurice jr as the sub, because Reiwoldt or Lynch could have fallen over, ...yet, the couple of tackles the fresh legged Maurice made, in that last quarter, - irrespective whether they cheated to get him on - were pivotal in almost winning the match for them.

I take your point about Banfield's versitility, and - full disclosure - I'm a big Banfield fan, but, I still think putting Liam as an emergency, is a good thing for his development, and a good thing for the team...

Nah! Just from a flexibility point of view Banfield should have been medi sub. He could play forward, back and mid... Henry has a long way to go and next year should be his time.

Liam’s not ready for finals footy. He hasn’t been consistent at home and away stuff yet, just compare him to ODriscoll, good attacking and tackling.

WTB, what have you got against Henry?

Colyers' strength? an oxymoron if ever I heard one, flashes into the play very occasionally, and is too easily moved out of contention for the footy in the air and on the ground. Henry does tackle, and is prepared to take on anyone, has footy smarts and is one of our best kicks into the forward 50. If he gets a crack as an off the bench impact player in finals, there may well be egg on a few faces.
