What a great game, particularly the Pies last quarter.

We aren't as good as the Dees or the Pies, but I'd love it if we were umpired like the Pies. No tiggy touchwood frees. You tackle and they drop the ball - you get a free kick. What a novel idea. If only it were in the rules somewhere.

I was at the game tonight at the G with a couple of Dees-tragic friends and about 71,000 other footy fans.
Needless to say, the mood in my camp was a bit down afterwards but the atmosphere during the game was electric.

There was just a sense of creeping inevitability (we all know how that feels) during the second half that Collingwood would again, somehow pull a winning performance out of the hat.
Fronting up to Marvel tomorrow. Here’s hoping that the lads have their kicking boots on.

While a great game to watch, I felt Melbourne fans would be scathing of some umpiring decisions.

Not many but the few and location were crucial. The inconsistency with holding the ball throughout the night was never more evident than the passage of play in which Collingwood player fended off, tackled and ball up called. Immediately after the ball up, Melbourne player tackled, holding the ball, Collingwood goal.

Both were holding the ball, one would see Melbourne clear it’s defence, the ultimate ended in a goal for the Pies.

Collingwood got at least 3 goals from free kicks, the one above (missed first kick), one other holding the ball which was 100% correct and one from a push in the back which I could get 20 clips from last week that weren’t paid.

Pies very lucky.

I get a sense Ch7 have been given the no umpire bashing memo as there were many times they were quiet other than a very brief BT “I’m not sure about that” or “….. fans may be a little upset”.

Holding the ball rule is completely shot. It doesn’t matter what game you watch you can never tell which one will be called.
The rule needs to be interpreted as it was 20 years ago.
It is holding the man if you touch the player before he has control of the ball.
It is a holding the ball if the player has control of the football, and gets tackled and doesn’t execute a legal disposal.
Currently there is way too much leniency given to players impeding the player attempting to get the ball. There is way to much leniency given to incorrect disposal of the footy.
This is and was a much simpler interpretation and prior opportunity is eliminated
