Some interesting news for Freo fans from the AFLW draft, Sabreena Duffy nominated for it last minute which I initially thought was to satisfy rules to be a top up player in the future but it looks like
Melbourne are going to pick her up. I doubt this is an intentional thing by Duffy to sidestep Freo but it will suck to lose her to Melbourne and get nothing in return for her at the trade table. It's a pretty big loophole (although I assume we could have countered it by drafting her last night).
Also, as if the OOFTIT's being handed 7 of the first 8 picks in the WA draft wasn't rough enough, with their last pick (which was before our second). they stole Joel Western's sister Mikayla off us. She'd been training with us and was a top up for us last season, playing a game against Melbourne when covid hit the girls. A bit of a snake move by the OOFTIT's.
On the other hand, Ella Roberts was very congratulatory towards Stribley for getting to Freo on the Freo instagram. I'm not sure how long Ella's contract there will run but I hope it's a season and then back home to us.
Our first pick last night Madi Scanlon trained with the OOFTIT's as an add on a year or so ago and was offered a contract a few weeks back as a mature age top up (more concessions the OOFTIT's received for being rubbish). However they told her she couldn't play finals for Claremont and had to begin training with them. She promptly told them where to go with news Freo were quite keen on her in the draft (she's good mates with Jess Low who played with her at the same amateur club where I used to play) and she took her chances in the draft to get to Freo.
Madi then produced a huge game against East Freo (the heavy favourites for the flag) with a move into the midfield in the first final a couple of weeks ago, BOG with 27 touches 5 marks and 5 tackles alongside the likes of Jasmin Stewart. They've managed to fight their way back into the WAFLW GF for a rematch to be held Sat arvo (should be broadcast on ch7) and hopefully she chops up and shoves it up the OOFTIT's. She's got a huge ceiling both athletically and talent wise, grabbing her out of the OOFTIT's clutches is a massive coup.
