TOPIC: Call the Rules Police

"The AFL wrote to all clubs today, informing them of a crackdown on holding the ball interpretations in 2022. And a stronger focus on prior opportunity and ducking into tackles". Some football journalist.

It moves like a virus.

How do you crackdown on a crackdown of a crackdown that was a result of clubs exploiting ham fisted rules made on the hop in the first place?

We all, we all get stupid in the heat
You've basted your brains with the shatter and defeat up on the street
And this is nowhere

We are entering year 20 of cracking down on holding the ball. 5 more years and the game becomes volleyball.

Is there a more confusing sports admin bunch in the world than the people that run the AFL?

Every year, half the talk of AFL fans is about understanding the rules of the game.

Kpi for the Manager rules …..number of rule changes that you can bring in that only a person that’s drunk ten pints of Guinness can understand.

does this mean no more 360 spins before hand balling?

Yes, that is exactly what it means Jezza ....
... well, for the first five rounds,
... then it will be back to the previous interpretation...
... until round one of the following year
... then there will be a crackdown on the rule
(repeat).

The premise of rewarding someone for a tackle is the flaw.

Scrap the law. You can't throw it and if you jump on it it's holding the ball.

The whole purpose of tackling is to disposses the ball off your opponent.

nah, tacking is about stopping a player (and the opposition’s movement of the ball) in their tracks.

and what kind of chicanery is “dispossessing the ball” - are you watching too much of David King?

It's like a spoil. The umpire doesn't reward you for punching, your reward is that your opponent didn't take a mark.

If you tackle, the main reward should be that you stopped your opponent. The umpire should lean towards calling play on and let them play football.

Getting rid of the ball as fast as you can doesn't make for a good game of football. It results in short handballs and rubbish kicks to players who are out of position.

I understand the rules just fine - get on some of the black stuff you blokes and put your heads to it.

I'm glad you understand the rules, polly because you'd be the only one.

AFL must the only game where the rules don't really change that much as they are written but they change vastly , almost week by week due to ad hoc, knee-jerk reactions. Coaches keep saying "it's a hard game to umpire" and that's true because one week a rule as written means one thing and the next week, the exact same written rule means something completely different.

This is before you you include the vastly different application of the rules in the same game. Consistency is not a trait you would associate with the AFL. Having read that meaningless pile of garbage put out by AFL House, I still have no idea what they will be doing this year because apparently based on the AFL's letter, they're actually going to enforce rules that currently already exist.

Who knows what that will entail?

Either hand out a "Best impression of trying to dispose of the football while being tackled" award at the Brownlows, or pay a free kick against any player that does not genuinely try to dispose of the footy when tackled.

The biggest blight on the game is the number of ball-ups, and the only way to get rid off them is to enforce the spirit of the rules.

They started all this by taking simple rules and applying "Interpretations".

Simple rules don't need interpreting, they need applying. When did you see a Nadal forehand winner "interpreted" as a illegal play?

When did you see a 6 from Warner "interpreted" as "I'm not paying that because he's a dickhead/troublemaker/show pony/cheating scuzzball who I don't like"
