TOPIC: Winging It

So I want to know who Dockerlanders think is going to be the starting wingers.
Ive gone Freddie on one wing and ........who?
Options include Clark, Young, Aish, Tucker, Walker, or could one of the newbies step straight up. Johnson, Erasmus or Worner?
Clark you would think would be the logical choice but he keeps saying half back yet I see in the Club Annual report from JLo he has thrown in "halfback/ wing" when discussing Clark, so he is obviously still considering it.
Johnson looks so classy with that disposal on both feet, you would feel he should play asap. Would he be fit enough to play wing before graduating to midfield though or does he need a season at Peel?
Thoughts??

Henry played the last few games of the year on the wing.

I would think that it would be close to a crime not playing Clark on a wing.

Despite believing Clark should be a lock for a wing and that's where he is best suited, it does sound like we intend to play him as an attacking half back. With Young, Walker and Chapman looking better suited to half back at present (along with older heads like Ryan, Wilson, Aish and Hughes), it doesn't seem like the best idea to play him there. Clark belongs on a wing with his speed and hard running.

Freddy is the other who would be fantastic out there and from what we've seen at pre-season training, he's looking fit and beastly. He could be huge for us this season and a big part of the reason we improve from last year. He has all the skills and ability to own a wing for years to come and I hope he gets first opportunity to make one his own.

Henry is more of a lead up half forward who can play stints on a wing. He's the bloke who pushes up from half forward and then delivers the ball inside 50m while providing the occasional chop out to the blokes running the wings. I don't think he'll start on a wing but he should get moments in games where he'll need the legs to run up and down a wing.

Aish is probably going to sit on a wing for a good amount of time and rotate with some of the guys in defence. I'd like to see Clark rotating here but Walker is a good option too along with Young. Even Tucker may be used out there.

The dark horse is Worner getting an early go and as a mature pick (1 year older than the other draftees), he could be more physically ready for that role. He has all the attributes for it and from all the reports I've read on him since being drafted as well as going back and rewatching a few vids, he could surprise a lot of people.

Erasmus and Johnson are more inside midfielders but have attributes that allow them to play the wing. I think it's too much of a running role for either of them to really have any impact this coming year. They're more suited to a half forward rotating into midfield.

In summary, Freddy and Clark should have the wings but in reality they'll be shared between a lot of players.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Small aside: Have we started calling players on the wing ‘wingers’ yet? If it’s not already, surely ‘wingman’ as a position name is on the way out?

To the extent that wingers really exist, as discrete from other midfielders, then I reckon you need one that focuses on running hard backwards to defend, and one that focuses more on getting forward to be a link and hit-up targets.

If Clark starts as an attacking half-back, then I reckon Henry slots in as the attacking winger, and Tucker (or maybe Acres) slots in as the more defensive winger. I think we could see Aish play on the wing a little as he’s so good at using the ball.

Freddy is the wildcard because even though he could be an excellent winger, he tends to start in attack and he’s so good at running he can get up the ground and back again.

Personally, I’d like to see us rotate Lobb and Tabs up the ground a lot more this year to expose defensive mismatches, so perhaps they act as de facto wingers against certain teams.

The way we get injuries , we need more like a top six possilble wingers, names like Walker, Henry, Frederick, Clark Aish and Chapman.

I think Chapman will be an amazing player for us, based on the small sample size he's already had , I see Fyfe like ability.
Walker is fast becoming a star (as Biz predicted) and one of my favourite players to watch

Henry looks like he's filling into his body perfectly and this could be a break out year.

Frederick is a beast and ready to explode.

Clark looks slick on the training track and could be our best trade in years.

I'm super excited about our team this year, we've got players that can play multiple spots all over the ground , we're ready for finals , I'm Excited.

I read somewhere that Chapman has grown this year and is now 196cm tall, if he still uses the ball as well as we saw earlier this year he could play a similar role to Nick Cox at the bombers, primarily on a wing but able to play forward or back to cover for in game injuries.

So we agree we have Multiple choices.
I was sort of thinking we`d have two wingers but thats just too old school. Youre right, we will have probably multiple players rotating through that position which they hardly even call the wing any more. I still call :mids", rovers, ruck rover and centre so thats how far behind the times Im at.
For me, Freddie is the lock. Im so excited to see him play this year. As mentioned his physique has just gone to Marvel Hero Music level. He runs so effortlessly, he can get back and forward at will. Hes actually great aerially too, re watch his draft highlights. His next step is mental, he just has to realise he can evade and then ignite afterburners at will.
This year, finally, our second 22 is really quite capable and our depth is the best I can remember.
And we should get two whole new players as a bonus: Sturt and Hamling!
Sound the siren, start the season, Go Dockers!!

Hey, has anyone considered Fyfe going forward? He's not getting any younger and he takes a good mark?

What do you all think?
