Gerry Lopez - that's a blast from the past.
I was a young lad on my first solo overseas surfing holiday in about 1980 and was in a surf shop somewhere on Oahu (Hawaii). I was looking to pick up a Gerry Lopez 'Lightning Bolt' surfboard when one of the shop staff came up to me and said that the board I was looking at was a board had belonged to Lopez and that he had only ridden it a few times. Then to absolutely seal the deal hook, line and sinker, he pointed to a lady on the other side of the store and said that that was Lopez's mum. Come in sucker I don't know, but what is for sure, just minutes later I am standing on the footpath with that yellow lightning bolt (my precious). The board sits in my storeroom with a couple of other local boards. None have been ridden in years. Retirement is looming and I am considering what I might do with my time.
