TOPIC: The Draft

number 2 The Draft 10 months 1 week ago #1

number 2
So as it stands we have 2 picks - possibly adding 2 more for Cerra. Maybe only one.

Most here would have have us head to the draft and pick a variation of Erasmus, Amiss, JVR or Johnson with the first 2.
I'm in the JVR/Johnson camp. It's a vibe thing.
If we trade a pick out for Clark, that leaves us with one pick to select Motlop and Benning. All of these players have been mentioned as top 30 picks, with the locals heading further up the order with each game.

Who do we get and who misses out?

I think JVR/Erasmus is Plan A. JVR/Johnson a very worthy Plan B. But I don't think we should over-hype the locals in the draft in a year where the Victorian kids didn't play. So hopefully either we have a smart recruiter who has scouted the Vic kids or maybe we leave space for a cheeky play for an established mid younger than, say, 28.

I really don't get all the hype around Erasmus. There is no way we should be jumping out of our skins to get him ahead of JVR or any of the other good tall local forwards in the draft. There are a lot of good midfielders in the draft probably better credentialled than Erasmus including plenty of mature age talent in the WAFL such as Bailey Rogers who won the Sandover Medal recently. He offers a more durable option having played a lot of footy in defence prior to his breakout year this season.

Erasmus has had an injury interrupted year and played a lot of school footy rather than colts level or higher so I haven't seen as much and been able to compare. He obviously had a standout grand final as a bottom ager last season but I think most of his hype is about potential as a bit of a Fyfe clone. He's a very dynamic and powerful player with good speed, size and power who isn't afraid to fly for marks. He looks to be the prototypical modern mid and someone who could be a match winner

Having said that, I'm leaning towards Johnson and a few of the Vic mids ahead of him. It's a reasonably even field at that level so I won't be too disappointed whichever way we go but we do need to select a gun mid with one of our top 10 picks.

JVR seems like a no brainer to me although I was quietly stoked to see him slipping down a lot of rankings after playing predominantly in defense for the state while battling injury earlier in the season. He's probably guaranteed to now be going inside the first round which means we'd have to select him in that top 10 to have a chance. If you offered me JVR in the second half of the top 10 this time last year, I would've taken it in a heartbeat.

Benning won't go in the top 40 so we can pick him up wherever we'd like as a Cat B rookie (assuming no one bids for him after 40 so we don't have to use a list spot on him). Motlop is the interesting one as I see him as a top 3 small forward available this year. I can't see him lasting to 40 but I think we have to hope he does as I'd probably take others ahead of him at our second round pick. It's probably line ball as to who we take at that pick but there should be a pretty even spread of quality from that 20-35 range. I'd gamble on him making it to 40 (and probably lose!).
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

How do we get another top 20 pick and 20-30 pick to add to our 6, 8 & 27?

Gee, this Nick Daicos must be good, Collingwood have just handed over their 2022 second, third and fourth round picks for 2021 picks that they can use to match ant early bids on him.
I guess this what we may have to do to get some picks in this years draft. The only Academy kid I can see us matching bids for is Eric Benning after pick 20 as I think Jesses Motlop will be gone before Pick 40.
Do we have any father/son talent this year. I know there are some whose das didn't play the required amount of games like Ben Allan's kid at Claremont.

Looking forward to seeing Erasmus in the last U18's game.. I have heard his kicking is not amazing but that is his only real weakness.. Late birthday so might keep growing too

I wouldn't even worry about Clark if Geelong want to play funny buggers. Just take 6, 8, 27 (or whatever this works out to be with the early bidding on Daicos and Darcy). These are good selections as they stand. It's possible we will get a bit more for Cerra. Go to the draft, Clark is not worth the hassle with the twits at Geelong. Clark will have to wait a year.

It appears that Geebung are playing hard ball for a player not worth anymore than 4-5 games. Pathetic but not surprising.
I would assume that Bell will tell them to shove it and concentrate on Brodie at the Suns.

Best kicks are Wanganeen-Milera and Josh Rachele in this draft apparently

Word on the street is that "The Bulldogs are also open to shuffling some of their picks and drop down the order from 17 in a bid to bolster their total draft points and snaffle father-son gem Sam Darcy."
Therefore I reckon we should shuffle our pick 27 and a future 3rd rounder and grab 17.

We need to play hardball and get the strongest draft hand we can. We need tall forwards and more potential A grade midfielders. Forget trading for Clark or any others that just add depth we can get that in the rookie draft later like we picked up Treacy. There is some exciting talent from WA that we just have to try to get first for a change!

I see a lot of the trade rumours, especially those surrounding Lachie Neale and Coniglio, as being quite mischievous and aimed at trying to to dislodge our hold over 2 picks in Top 10 of draft. There is no way we should be using either of these, or any we gain from a possible Lobb trade, on these speculative trades. We must use them to target the local players who fit our needs.
Is there anyone out there who is good enough that we use one of these 2 picks? I can't think of any.
