That’s a bit harsh on Angus. He’s a very good inside midfielder and an average outside utility player. Acres or Bewley aren’t nearly as good as him as outside players and that’s their only job.
Angus finished 8th in Melbourne’s B&F last year despite playing out of position, missing 8 games and having statistically his worst year. Clearly the coaching staff admire what he brings to the team.
When I think of Angus I think of Mickey Barlow. Barlow was an elite inside midfielder, but not a great runner and not the most penetrating kick. Angus is slightly worse as an inside midfielder, but much better at getting up and down the ground. On the right team Angus would be very good, and on the wrong team still very handy. I don’t think Freo’s 2022 team is the best fit for Angus – we’ve got Fyfe, Mundy and Serong as inside mids pushing Angus to the periphery again – but Mundy’s probably only got 3 years left, and I don’t think Fyfe can be relied upon to play a whole season.
Consider that Connor Blakely played 11 games for Freo last year. Angus would be useful next year, and more than that in the 2023-2025 window when we should be pushing for a flag. I don’t think getting him should be a priority, but he would be more than a throw-in.
