TOPIC: Gold Coast

They got millions of dollars in support, a squad of first round draft picks, a new stadium. They got it all. Where did it all go so horribly wrong? I don't watch much football these days. I watched a bit of the Suns this weekend. They didn't look to be trying.

And now I hear the jungle drums beating over a Tassie side at the expense of Gold Coast. Again.

What's the solution here? No, what's the problem?

They made Guy McKenna the coach. That's where.

I don't care for your imperialistic attitude that because a team is unsuccessful they should be relocated. That sort of nonsense has been thrown at Fremantle before, and probably will again. They suck, and they will get better.

Have you seen Carlton play football at any time in the past decade? Move them on if it's about the football.

Imperial? You don't care for it!

You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor!

It's cultural isn't it? They don't need the next number one pick they need five Matt De Boers and a Justin Longmuir and maybe a Neesham as a player development officer. And this is where I wanted the thread to go, you can have all the picks, money and support. But character in leadership is critical. And they don't have it. And that's what they didn't get right. McKenna, Ablett is no leader, can't even remember the league coke head they on boarded. They forgot the important stuff and just spent lots of money and draft picks.

As for you good sir. If it was a diplomatic mission. Then where was the Ambassador?

Stuart Dew doesn't really set a great example, every time I see him on tv (he's hard to miss), I think he's gonna need a mobility scooter soon.

I just don't see anyone on the field other than Touk Miller and Sam Collins setting the bar. And Collins didn't play.

They set GC and GWS up with lots of early draft picks. Those players turned out (not surprisingly) to be quite good. To stay within their salary caps GC and GWS had to get rid of good players as they came into their prime. Which is not exactly a recipe for success.
The potential supporter base for GC is retirees who want a warmer life, and if they come from Vic they'll already have a team. If they come from Sydney, its rugby league for them.
So all in all, the only actual mystery is why GWS has done as well as it has.

What they needed to do was less draft picks and more experience and better people. Incentivise clubs to give up a quality experienced player for an early first round pick.

I've always considered Tassie to be the obvious place to establish an AFL team being an AFL state and with so many great players coming from the state. Local support would not have to be contrived. This would influence good players being retained. Location, location, location. I'd favour re-location of GCS to Tassie.

Apparently you can't have a Tassie team. You have to have a Launceston team or a Hobart team. I'm not sure why - maybe something about the gene pool.

You could fit that gene pool into a 44 gallon drum, RR, should've called it a gene bucket.

If you think player retention is a problem for the Suns, spare a though about a group of young affluent boys trying to work outdoors during a winter in Hobart, or a season in Darwin while clubs around the country are circling like vultures. Player turnover won’t just be a problem with the Suns.
