I think it's pretty hard to take much from last week's game as they were playing a bunch of no names who would battle to beat some reserves teams. Which of course makes it all the more galling that the slime can promote a stack of no names due to injury and still flog us.
Did anyone go to the game?
On paper we had a number of strong performers who except for Treacy(who was named in the best) boarded the plane. Some local players are still outperforming our squad players though. Bell kicked six goals, Howlett and Hancock had 34 and 33 disposals.
Concerning that after all the talk on Valente that he struggles to get in the low teens for disposals. I assume he's playing in the midfield but I suppose he's only played two games this year, but it's no different from when he played before injury.
What position is O'Driscoll playing? He's only averaging ten disposals.
Have we wasted a pick on Walker. Hasn't played a league game yet. Surely our recruits should be playing league or is he just not up to it?

All those players whose ability you're questioning are both kids in their first season or two and are coming back off serious injuries. Calling them duds because you checked the WAFL stats isn't a great way to assess them. You need to reset your expectations because 30 touch, 3 goal games are not going to be happening.

O'Driscoll is coming back from serious shoulder and leg injuries which ruined any pre-season. He's getting limited minutes across half back as he slowly builds fitness.

Walker is coming back from serious injury that meant he had no pre-season either. He played a limited game in the ressies where he looked good and then missed out on the weekend due to the cap on Freo players in Peel's side and the Peel ressies having a bye.

Valente also had no pre-season due to injury and started back in the ressies with Walker on limited minutes before playing limited minutes for Peel's league side on the weekend.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Thanks for that Biz. I will add that both Pina and Thorne were excellent in setting up those big numbers with other players - two pint sized maestros that put in ten gallon games.

Biz could you please explain the rules about Dockers numbers representing Peel? I’ve looked and can’t find any ruling on this other than around finals.
Is this a WAFL ruling or an agreement with Peel?

Where did I call them duds? I hadn't taken into account their long time out, particularly Walker. And pleased to know that we are not throwing O'Driscoll in too early. Didn't know about that. I hope for improvement as we all do, but certainly didn't refer to them as duds.
Valente is no kid anymore but also realise he has been unable to string many games together and perhaps he is on limited game time.

You didn't use the word dud but it was heavily inferred from the rest of what you said, particularly so when you're questioning our recruiting and wasting picks on these guys.

Valente has started his third year and is only 20yrs old. I don't know whether he'll make it or not because he's spent almost the entirety of his 2 and a bit years injured and not playing much in the WAFL or training. He certainly hasn't been fit when he has played and able to show the power, run and ball winning ability he had in his draft year. I wouldn't expect him to show that for a while just yet either. When you spend an extended time out injured, it's difficult to build your body up to a point where you can show the full extent of what it's capable of.

Patience is needed in all these cases.

Henry and Western put on a clinic with their disposal in that WAFL match but are both still quite slight. I see big futures for both but the AFL may be a step too high just yet. However I'd still enjoy seeing them getting a gig in the AFL side at stages this year, their disposal, movement and run was impressive to say the least.

Polly, I spruiked Thorne last year as a good pick for us and was told he is too small, and won't make an AFL player. The small amount I've seen of him this year convinces me he will be a player, we should grab him in the MSD.

I think it's fair to ask questions about our players. We all do it, plenty of the time, without inferring that they are duds. There have been plenty of calls and questions from people here on Crowden, Hughes, Colyer, Tabener, Treacy and others. So why not Peel players?
You rightly pointed out that they have had no pre seasons and are, sensibly, are on limited game time.
I personally hope that Valente does come good as he would be an ideal big bodied replacement for Mundy. He had injury issues before we drafted him, we then tried to change his running style? and he has never been properly fit. For his and our sake he needs a good run because are we going to want to keep him on the books for a fourth season and the run the risk of getting much of the same?

You’re going to be sorely disappointed Corp if you think Valente is big-bodied like Mundy or Fyfe. He has nowhere near their height.
And don’t get confused by the height quoted on the FFC website. Those numbers are traditionally malarkey. I saw him when he played in that Peel Ressies game a few weeks ago and he certainly ain’t big-bodied. Broad shouldered maybe but not tall.
