We wouldn't talk, laugh or smile with our opponent before the siren. And if you got caught doing it the coach would belt you with soap cakes stuffed into pillow cases. Like Joker did to Gomer in Full Metal Jacket. All I see from these kids is sportsmanship, civic decency and good manners. Weak as water.

Depended on the opponent, Hypen, some of them got really psyched out if you did laugh & shake hands with them, and it played on their mind for a couple of hours. Some you just totally ignored.

As for the coach, he preferred the "10 laps after training" and the "50 pushups before & after training" instead of buying 20 cakes of soap and a pillowcase.

This was all just an elaborate Kubrick troll.

Get me started. I dare you.

Mention The Deer Hunter.

Do it.

Walken made two great movies in his career. Only two. Pulp Fiction and The Deer Hunter. Which, was a master piece.

A masterpiece of long-winded twaddle.

The wedding went longer than an actual wedding. It was 3 hours into the film before they started on the plot. By the time the action started I was rooting for the bullet.

We had a Betamax. The war was lost but Dad got a bargain. No Deer Hunter at the video shop but they had all the Porky's.

He saw Coppola's opening in the Godfather and got a little carried away maybe.

these “opponents” today often have long shared histories and friendships that transcend the game. thank goodness we’re not bogged down in rigid adherence to past traditions or we’d never make any progress

oh, and the Deer Hunter is an awesome movie.

Walken was also pretty good in the film clip for Weapom of Choice

I thought I was brought up on the wrong side of the tracks but the opening post for this thread makes me feel like we were gentlemen. We were expected to shake our opponents hand when we first took our positions at the start of the game ... then, and only then, could the biff begin.

He was a pretentious bore who didn't know when to cut.

Saw a thing for what looks like a good documentary on Alad Ladd Jr. I was looking up something on Trove and saw an ad for an Alan Ladd Sr movie, and I forgot what it was called so I just did a search and the trailer for the doco came up. He was a studio executive.
