How come Mitchell didn't get fined for his obvious acting as though he had got a high tackle and laughing about it after his free kick.

Or lose one premiership point. That’d learn ‘em.

Grown men picking on boys just because they can’t play as well as they can and need to hurt them to try to win a game of sport.
Embarrassing Hawthorn - should be ashamed of yourselves.

$2000 penalties for blokes in $300k+ p.a. !!
Less than 1% of the average annual salary ... not much of a penalty or disincentive.

Maybe set penalties based on 5% increments of salary in the future. That would help to avoid a stupid theoretical situation like Buddy getting a $1k hit while collecting $1,000k p.a.

No, give them 3 weeks suspension, with no match payments, and the fine. Make it a disincentive to offend, not an incentive.

I don't think players are worried about their wallet when out on the ground and in the thick of the action.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

No, but they are worried about suspensions, and the cumulative effects of continuing to offend.

They'll be more worried about not carrying out instructions, than copping a small fine

The effect of this, you'd hope, is to discourage teams from employing thuggery as a tactic against Fremantle. Carlton got away with injuring players, which set the template for Hawthorn to run with. We'll see what teams do from now on.

Actually, Cap'n, we will see what the Umps & MRP do from here on.

purple kit
The umps started the game impartially, just calling the frees as they saw them, by qtr time we had 11 to the hawks 1, somebody obviously got in their ear at qtr time because the hawks didn’t stop infringing the freo players but the free kicks stopped being paid. This seemed to embolden the hawks players who got worse, as the game started to get out of hand with spot fires all over the ground, the umps responded by paying frees against freo players for standing up for themselves, like the one against Brayshaw. The whole thing was a mess. If it wasn’t for the freo coaches telling our players to ignore their tactics and get on with playing the game, it could have turned very ugly with an all in brawl.
Sometimes the umps need to ignore the count and just keep paying the obvious frees as they see them.

Do you think there could ever be a circumstance where Freo was on the wrong end of an 11-1 free kick count and you’d go: ‘yeah, these umps are calling them like they see them’?
