George had his faults but sports casting was not one of them, he could call any sport well.

And if you didn't know that, all you had to do was ask him.

Drew was good, Wally Foreman described the game he was watching, as did the early, radio Commetti. For all his faults, George was another who described the game.
Wally was pretty good however he did appear to have a slight obsession about the size of Freos crowds back in the day. I miss Clint Grybas.

Ok, I gave it an honest objective assessment tonight. Nope, it was way better with Bruce - C7 over did, too many in your face gushing good ol' boys. JB was only slightly worse than Hodgey - same old "hows that golf score Punter?' stuff. Abysmal - makes the Big Bash commentary reserved in comparison.

Sorry, fail.

One aspect of 'modern' broadcasting that gives me the irrites is the cheering on players / teams and Bruce was just as bad as anybody else. This player was special or delicious or gushing over this team or that. It's sickening.

Just call the game. It doesn't need any fake rahrah to make it exciting. It's an exciting game all by itself, when it's allowed to be. Bruce's gushing was horrendous. Brayshaw, Brian Taylor and the like appear to believe the more they yell and the less actual content is the key to a matchday experience. Even Commeti spent his time trying to be over-clever, although he was certainly more understated than the current crop of screaming imbeciles. Baz is a failed wannabe Commeti but with less talent, less charisma and less welcome.

Maybe it's my age speaking but the old days of Drew Morphett, George Grilusich and the like, who concentrated on calling the game, not taking sides and not talking up or down potential player reports. To me, all of that just smacks of unprofessionalism and attempts at manipulation.

I'm not sure that I can point to a commentator these days that isn't actively partisan on their comments and the result is they can't call the game properly because of the spin they try to impart.

It must be my age but too much has changed and not for the better

Totally agree Yeti. Too much has changed and not for the better, but that's certainly not limited to game calling. So many things have changed for the worse imo, that i just don't have the amount of interest or enthusiasm for the game I grew up with, that I used to have.

"And let's not forget that we've got a big weekend of horse racing coming up - the Something-or-Other race in Sydney and a ripping one on the Mornington peninsula...which I believe you've got a glue factory rescue running in, Hodgey?"
"That's right, Jaybee - my pride Naggy-Neigh-Neigh running in the twelfth, race 16!"
"Wow-wee, that's something to look out for, isn't it! Hey, while we're onto the Mornington peninsula, how's your golf handicap down there Richo?"

So what you bombs are saying is you preferred commentators that complain like bitter old men between their commentary to younger-ish blokes that talk like they’re at the pub between their commentary.

You want test cricket commentary at the footy.

There were times when his commentating verged on homoerotica, but he was always professional and you could tell he loved the game.

I was never a big fan, but the dude would do credibly at everything from biathlon to boxing and obviously deeply loves afl.

Always seemed like a complete tool of a bloke to me, but he was definitely really good at his job.
