Bruce McAvaney is retiring from the footy. Before all you cynical bastards get in with your love of Basil or whoever you're in love with this week, I'd like to get in and say that football will never sound as good.

You had me fearing much worse, Shane, didn’t you. We all make fun of Bruce, don’t we, but he is a bit of a legend, isn’t he .

We know he’s got some health issues, hasn’t he, but you’d be a bit of a prick not to wish him all the best.

Wouldn’t you.

Sorry. That didn't occur to me.

Bruce will be around to call the sun burning out.

He held a privileged position and I wish him well in retirement. He was the Sabrina Hahn of the AFL media, knows his stuff but able to grate cheese without a grater.

Danger, Dusty et al will miss him.

No, Zorro, you wouldn't. He took the commentary art from describing the game, to a love in of certain players, and is as culpable as Rex Hunt for what we have to put up with today, if the mute button on our TV is broken.

Go quickly into the fading light, Bruce.

Hear! Here!, RM. I wish him well, but hope never to hear his nauseating utterances ever again. He was gorgeous.

There were some valid criticisms of his overly-effusive style, and maybe he’d lost a step in his calling, but I always loved Bruce and this is a bit sad; largely because the networks have never promoted anyone capable of filling his shoes.

It’s a big loss to the intellect and integrity of football calling.

Ok everyone - you lose Richie Benaud and you end up with Jim Maxwell. Just saying.

It’s a bit like that quote wrongly attributed to Churchill. Bruce is the worst AFL commentator except for all those others who have been tried.

He WAS good but started to believe the hype that his employers used to build his profile. Over use of his own signature cliches diminished his recent performances.

From the Richmond files -

These commentators who can't string a sentence together are good cause they are only talking about the football.

Bruce will be sorely missed.

Which one is it?

I don't know what that means but I don't want to hear one complaint about Brian Taylor's inane self inflating ego trip he calls football commentary from you.

Polly, Richie described the cricket, Maxwell was the Bruce of cricket commentary. They (Jim & Bruce ) tried to be the new Commetti, but they, along with Dennis himself, failed.
