I’m a tad surprised by that outcome but surprises seem to be par for the course with the match review outcomes. An identical tackle with the head hitting the turf could have resulted in concussion and a 2-3 week holiday. Given that the Crow’s player got up unaided there is no suspension. I guess the lesson is to pick your target and dont tackle thin skulled players too hard!!

...and yet, if you play for one of the right teams, you can run a shoulder through somebody's head from behind, put them out of the game and get it declared 'just one of those incidents'.

Let's not even mention elbows....

I dont think there is a club in the comp that doesn't have its conspiracy theorists and we certainly have ours. The AFL umps and match reviews magically seem to be able to convince some fans from every club they they are being singled out and targeted - I'm not sure how that is possible but, as Benny boy would say, such is life. I'm not suggesting that they get it right all the time (far from it) but there are swings and roundabouts. I thought Bowers was going to get scrubbed out and she didn't - that's a win, yet we still seem to find a way to turn it into an anti Freo outcome.

To my eye that looks like a perfect tackle that just happened end up with Bowers’ opponent’s head hitting the turf at force. But if I was administering a sport worth a couple of billion dollars a year, understood the science of concussions and their long-term effects, and understood how liability works, I might also be reluctant to admit that a ‘perfect tackle’ can be a direct cause of the brain scramblies.

From a liability perspective, a sport where a ‘freak accident’ might cause a concussion is very different from a sport where executing a skill of that sport perfectly causes a concussion.

For all the conspiracy theorists that constantly go on about the match review decisions that (i) apparently highlight the AFL’s hatred of Freo, and (ii) allow non Freo high profile players to get away with murder.

A week after our star player got a slap on the wrist for a tackle that ended with her opponent’s head hitting the turf ....

Maybe we aren’t so hard done by after all.

Apart from the head hitting the ground I don’t think that the two tackles are very similar.
It looks to me like
Bowers tackled the player and brought her straight to the ground.
The Carlton player slung the other player across her upper leg into the ground.

I hadn't intended to respond to the conspiracy theory posts on here but if the same nonsense is going to be raised over and over then maybe the record should be set straight after all.

There was no anti Freo conspiracy claimed but pointing out the inconsistencies with the 'interpretations' on similar incidents. The inconsistencies are rather obvious and most certainly are not the result of any conspiracy theory.

As for avoiding liability, if the 'perfect tackle' can result in a head injury then the AFL would need to ban the tackle to avoid liability. That would be stupid.

The simple fact is AFL football is a contact sport and the liability is not on the AFL alone. To avoid liability the AFL would need to show that they have taken all reasonable steps to reduce the chance of head injury but when similar incidents attract wildly different interpretations then any chance of showing 'all reasonable steps' goes out the window.

Then trying to conflate two dissimilar incidents to further an argument against a claim that never existed must rate as peak futility.

I’m not suggesting that they are the same. I’m indicating they have been treated on their own merits and we should stop this obsession that Freo are always treated worse than other players by match review decisions.
For the sake of further clarification, I can live with suggestions that there is a degree of Vic bias at AFL House (as per my last post “Puzzling”), however, I believe that the match review decisions are frustrating because of their inconsistency rather than because they target Freo.

The problem has always been, and why they tried to bring the point system in, the unconscious biases of the people on the tribunal. They have never been able to find someone to make a ruling, who understands how to address those things in their decision making. Which is why the penalties have always been higher for certain groups, black people would have it far worse than Fremantle players but don't discount a rich history of the tribunal being more inconsistent with some types of people than other types of people.

Not of that applies here though.

WTB, try reading my post instead of doubling down.

You know the bit where it says no conspiracy but inconsistency.

That's ok, everybody else can read it for themselves.
