I thought Kobe wasn’t available until next year?

“ The Demons, meanwhile, have invited the son of club favourite Jeff Farmer, Kobe, to join their summer program. The 18-year-old was a member of the Dockers' Next Generation Academy and had been eligible to select as a father-son by both clubs”

And that is going to stop Melbourne breaking the rules? Come on.

If he is part of Freo's NGA, can Melbourne have him be a part of their club program?

It was only picked up a month or so out from the draft that he'd nominated as previous news reports had his DOB different (eligible next year). As someone eligible in the draft just gone, he hadn't done anywhere near enough to get picked up.

Kobe's colts season was ok but at that level, you need to do a fair bit more and be spending some time in the midfield if you aren't a key position player. I can't see him being picked up as he is someone who definitely needs a few years of development. I'd see how he's going after a couple years developing in the WAFL but good luck to Melbourne if they want to take him on as a project player.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Is he part of our NGA? And haven't the rules changed for that next year anyway?

I don't know, but I would be doing everything I could to get him to Freo, given the footy ability that runs deep in his bloodline. The media is all over the Rioli factor, but don't disregard the absolutely brilliant footy skill & nouse that runs through the Farmers, generation after generation.

Yes I know what you mean. There are plenty of successes, but it doesn't always work that way. eg Silvagni, Sierokowski, Bourke, Roach, Neagle, Barham, Buckley, Jarman, Round, Walls, Clarke are some.

I don't want to choose someone just on name if there are better players available. Crows didn't want Edwards, son of one of their greats and slime took him with a low pick. In fact his brother didn't make it either.

He was in our academy but as far as I know, that only runs up until your draft. I don't think anyone had much interest in Kobe based off his performances this season which isn't to say he won't get better in the future. But when list sizes have all diminished by 4/5 players this season with further cuts in the future, only the best players are going to make it. Kobe has a lot of work to do to get amongst those.

Biz, CA, I will stand by my judgement on what I have seen, not that I disparage your opinions.

Fair enough. I only saw him a couple of times so I'm mostly relying on those occassions and reports from others but they were under the impression he was an underage player playing against older and bigger opponents. If he is the same age as those kids then it definitely changes the perceptions of him and his performances. He's gone from an outside chance next year if he developed well to no chance this year.

Maybe another year in the WAFL will see him build on those performances but he's a long way behind those drafted this year and I'm not one to draft purely on who a players dad was.

Hey Biz, what do you make of the fact we didn’t utilise our second Cat B rookie spot on Haddow, Farmer or Chris Walker, are we allowed to use that on them in the supplementary selection or mid season draft or has that boat sailed if they are no longer in our NGA?

I think you may be overstating the importance of “bloodlines” RM. Plenty of sons fall short of their father’s talents. I loved Jeff and the notion of having his son with us is appealing but the question that should be asked is, if he wasn’t a Farmer would we be picking him up based on his own footy talents?

Spot on there Walter, the mob up the road could have picked up Chris Mainwaring's kid Zac but he is just not ready despite having talent. We also could have taken Sean McManus' son Lachlan but again not quite up to it. I'm still not sure what's gone on though with young Kobe Farmer though. There was a bit of talk early this year about the fact that he was quite a talent and had a preference for Fremantle and then, out of the blue, this news of Melbourne pinching him. Reminiscent of the Jeff White shenanigans.
