Next step (from the ABC)

“.....She said singer-songwriter Kutcha Edwards and The Seekers' singer Judith Durham's 2009 anthem, Lyric for a Contemporary Australia, was more appropriate.

....Some of those lyrics include the words: "Australians let us all be one, with peace and harmony, Our precious water, soil and sun, grant life for you and me. Our land abounds in nature's gifts to love, respect and share, And honouring the Dreaming, advance Australia fair. With joyful hearts then let us sing, advance Australia fair."

"It is a beautiful lyric. It may be time for us to write something that captures the spirit of the nation, the strength of the nation and is inclusive of all people who strive and live and die as part of this nation," (end quote)

Like most things we shouldn’t expect a lot from small changes but neither should we underestimate how important it is to keep making them.

After reading the letters section in this morning’s West (insert story of stealing it off a homeless person or finding it on the backseat of a taxi) I have to ask - has anyone ever seen Raglan Matt and Mario Rapanaro in the same room?

Let Eskimo Joe collaberate with ACCA DACCA for the new improved 2021 version of Advance Australia Fair (or else).

I don't think we need accadacca, eskimo joe or this eifel 65 bloke.

There has been a project running for some time called the Recognition in Anthem where changing the word 'young' to 'one' was first proposed.

www.rap.org.au/

It's worthwhile visiting their website. Not only is it interesting but it puts things in context as far as changing the anthem goes. It also has proposals for further changes that better recognise first Australians. I'm inclined to see those changes adopted. It's past time that we moved to reduce divisions in the community not continuing to define ourselves into smaller groups.

"Indigenous figures" is a strange concept.

I guess it's News Corps so they can't really write "We asked all the back people we know, 4 of the 8 got back to us and were very polite about Judith Durham."

The second verse is usually not sung but as a child of migrants I like its sentiments

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

It always amuses me that the AFL plays the French National Anthem much more than the Australian National Anthem.:

Arise, children of the Fatherland
Our day of glory has arrived

The verse does have noble sentiments:
“For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;”
... unless you are a coloured refugee arriving by boat ...
