Argentina don't do Hakas.

The nearest effort to that was the national anthem sung in Eora language.

Latrell Mitchell and Anthony Mundine who I don’t always agree with but in this instance I do, and I imagine many other First Nation people have a different view that it’s a small step in the right direction.

It’s widely communicated in the media that many indigenous people strongly dislike the anthem and that’s understandable from their perspective.

Wait until we’ve got an inclusive and representative anthem and then it’d be a step in the right direction.

It's a bit disingenuous to find a couple of professional drongos being publicly upset as the reason for you needing to comment. It was a symbolic gesture played out before a game of a minority sport.

What’s disingenuous is the private school based ARU executive thinking they’ll decide it’s a good idea to have an indigenous young woman sing the national anthem in her language when from an indigenous perspective there’s a widely discussed fundamental problem with the anthem.

What happened was that the ARU booked performers for their pre-game show.

I would have thought that having Anthony Mundine going off against an idea would be a massive argument in favour of the idea.

Half the time I'm convinced that he says things just to create a controversy. The other half of the time he's just being a *******.

It was an important moment where Australia presented indigenous Australians in a positive and respectful light. Some people however just ignore the positives and nit pick because not everything is perfect. I thought it was a very good step in the right direction and would want to see further steps.

Knocking efforts along these lines does nobody any favours.

Rugby Australia: “The lyrics...are not a direct translation of the English words, but rather substitute meanings that reveal the Eora’s deep connection to the land."

I'm patriotic, which is why I didn't like them changing our anthem, getting rid of the Volga Boatmen bit at the start.

But as for national anthems, I don't hold our nation to be particularly special. I see no particular reason to take our national anthem seriously. I'm not a patriotic Australian. We are good at some things, and bad at others. And while I vote, it really makes no difference to the result. The direction Australia goes is decided by a lot of people who aren't me, and for whom I have little respect. These are the sort of people who'd be very happy if I sang the anthem with gusto.

I note that my views have changed with time. In the 1970's through to the mid 1980's I was terribly proud to be an Australian (and I loved the music from this era, but I grew older and the music...). But since then there has been a growing disconnect between our supposed characteristics as a nation and the reality (or maybe I just saw things that had been there all along a bit more clearly). A bit like Fremantle FC. I signed up for brilliant/quirky/different, and for a while I got it. Then the Steves took it away. And there was nothing I could do about it but wait for a change...

Asa patriotic Australian who has always hummed along to our national anthem, reminding me that I am no longer young, but are now one, is unlikely to materially alter my humming. Whilst I understand that some were concerned that describing Australia as young was not historically correct, I think the change is another example of politicians implementing symbolic gestures, while continuously failing to address the real life issues. The gap is real and symbolism is not materially closing it. The Rudd apology occurred nearly thirteen years ago and, in my opinion, did not result in material change.
On a lighter note, I think engirdled is a word we could all embrace?

I’m not too fussed about the anthem one way or another. It neither bums me out nor fills me with pride. The flag on the other hand really pisses me off. The sooner we get rid of it the better. My long-held dream is that one day the aboriginal flag would become the flag of Australia, assuming our indigenous peoples support the idea. But I fear I’ll be long dead before that happens. So until then, just please get rid of the Union Jack. Then sing whatever anthem you want.

Well, if you can't flick off to Hawaii for a bit, you might as well change a word and hold a press conference about it.
