TOPIC: Matt Taberner

Be fair*. Tabs had quite a bit of time off with injuries. Then Roly left him out of the side saying, "We know what we've got with Taberner" as if to imply he was playing other guys to see what they had. Given all that, it is about time he came good, and I'm really enjoying it. I reckon he's got 5 more years tormenting the opposition.

* Not to Shane or Morgan, but to Tabs.

Taberner is academically gifted in mathematics. True story.

Thanks for clearing that one up for me. I thought you were claiming Yeti was highly intelligent.

Well he very well could be of course!

It's been said a few times but Tabs is elite at contested marking but can struggle with a lot of other areas of the game, particularly when the ball hits the ground or with ball in hand and under pressure (just look at a couple weeks ago). Unlike Dawson who was a one trick pony via spoiling, not everyone can take a contested mark and it's a huge asset to have.

He also has a couple of secondary attributes that are at a high level and help him in his role as the tall target, good size/strength and a tank that gets him to a lot of contests. It's a good package you can work with and when he's on, he's difficult to stop. Unfortunately that has rarely been the case over his 80 games due to a litany of reasons (developmental, tactical, situational) but hopefully becomes the case going forward.

91 goals from 80 games aren't stats to brag about and he's taken a long time to come through but hopefully at 27, he can start to bare fruit in a new system.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

In a couple of years, compare his stats pre 2020 post 2020. I think you will see then why he was drafted. Similar to a few others in our team.

There were 117 available selections before Freo took Taberner in the rookie draft, so if it was obvious to Freo or anyone else in 2013 that he was a lock to become a viable key forward then everyone did a great job of keeping it a secret. Tabs deserves a lot of credit for turning himself into a useful AFL player, but if you were inclined to think that Freo’s development has been lacklustre then surely Tabs is a shining example of how perseverance on behalf of the player and club can see a player go from a whisker away from being undrafted to a useful AFL player.

For what it’s worth, I think he’s the same player now as he was from about 2018. For example, last year he had 16.6 touches and 1.4 goals a game, to this season’s 10.2 touches to 1.8 goals a game (incidentally he’s had the same number of scoring shots, but has kicked a little straighter). Given how often Tabs gifts the ball to the opposition, playing him closer to goal makes the world of sense as it maximises his strengths and hides his limitations; but that is also a function of having Lobb and Hogan or Fyfe playing in the same forward line this season all of whom are much better at every other facet of the game than marking.

I’m really happy for him. A lot of players would have spat the dummy and gone back to Victoria when Freo signed Hogan and Lobb.

Hogan & Fyfe haven't spent a lot of time in the same forward line as Tabs this year.

Tabs was drafted that year, there were a few that weren't, so someone at Freo saw something in him, and he is now being given the chance to show what he has got. He had to work a bloody sight harder for his marks, goals and points in 2018 than he does now.
