We were 3 goals better atleast. The bl@@dy umpires had about 13 dubious calls all to the advantage of the other mob. I felt at times that we were about to explode and smash the game open. But the other mob made sure they slowed the game down somewhat.
Anyway, I was happy with what I saw.

Ive had a look back at Tab's efforts and it's interesting to see how WC changed their handling of him when compared to the first quarter. It looks like they (understandably) were worried about his impact up to that time and decided that he should be double/triple teamed during most marking contests. As a consequence he appeared to drop off in his impact on the game. That said, and to his credit, he was rarely outmarked and the ball regularly came to ground. This is where we came apart as we didnt have the depth of talent to take advantage of the ground ball. Im not saying that Tabs played a perfect game (and he did miss a couple of sitters), but he has the capacity to be a very good target in the forward line and his efforts would be more valuable if he has some ground ball assistance.

I think that’s right WTB, and it was noticeable that McGovern didn’t have his usual influence. Small aside, can you believe West Coast will be paying him $1.2 million a year until 2023? Ouch.

It was also notable that Lobb worked his way into the game once they locked down on Tabs.

I think Lobb and Tabs make a really good twin towers combination, but they will be better with some other forwards like Hogan and CamMac pushing up the ground to get them the ball, and we need a genuine goal-sneak to live at their feet. I realise Freo’s coaches are probably setting Henry some target about pressure acts per game, but we could do a lot worse than sitting him in the forward 50 for the rest of the year to learn how to crumb at the feet of the big guys.

Here's the thing: when Cam marks in the forward 50 he kicks a goal; when he marks 20m out directly in front he kicks a goal; when he marks 2m out in the goal square he'll kick a goal. God's truth.

"...and he did miss a couple of sitters" just doesn't wash at the best of times, it's soul destroying on others. Yet in a Derby it's an immediate ticket to the wilderness.

There is alot to like about where we are headed. Going into the game I thought that with all the injuries there was a chance of replicating last years derby disaster but Longmuir has the team playing good footy and we are continuing to blood youngsters. Covid has come at an opportune time for where the club is at. Any premiership will have an asterisk next to it this year so hopefully they will continue to experiment and persist with youth. Importantly it is also enjoyable to watch. If they can get on top of the long term injury problems I am with hypen in thinking this may be the beginning of an era of success for the club.

": when Cam marks in the forward 50 he kicks a goal; when he marks 20m out directly in front he kicks a goal; when he marks 2m out in the goal square he'll kick a goal"

The problem is that when playing in the firsts, Cam doesn't mark it 50, 20 or 2 metres out. He's had a couple of years to knock down the door but remains a player of unrealised potential.

CamMac kick 1.6 goals a game last year (roughly his career average) often as a lone hand in the forward line. Tabs as the focus of a potent-looking attack hasn’t done any better.

So ..we've got the problem Polly, that Tabs now gets it, but can't kick it, and, Cam can kick it, but can't get it!

Sort of feeling that Tabs is the better option, because at least he 'might' kick it.

Just wish both of them would pull the digit out and be 'the real deal'.

Tabs has been a long term project and could have real impact if he can now 'nail' his kicking.

Cam is also - in my view - a long term project', but he has to work out - pretty quickly - how he's going to get involved in a game, because there is no doubting his skills, but his 'presence' is too often 'lacking'....

I don't see them as one against the other. Should both be in imo.

If you were an opposition coach who would you send your better defender to - Cam or Tabs? Im guessing Tabs because if you dont he will repeat last weekend's first quarter effort. WCE would waste McGovern on Cam but they were forced to play him on Tabs. Dont get me wrong, Tabs isnt our saviour and Cam has his strengths, but I just see Tabs as being slightly more dangerous and if that means he attracts a better defender our challenge is for other players around him to stand up. One of those players might actually be Cam.

Hogan, Fyfe, and one of Logue/Hamling/Pearce. That might have made a bit of a difference on the weekend.

If I'd had to drop the 3 equivalent players from the other mob it would be Darling, Yeo and one of Barrass/McGovern/Hurn. Oh, what might have been.

Taberner. He’ll be right, mate. Anyone else kicked a goal every game this year?

On a different note, how does Darling get away with being an arsehole, a prancing pony and an umpires pet all at once? It’s repulsive. Almost as repulsive as Jake Wateman’s scone. Legendary weak and legendary fugly.

We lost this game because we lost the centre clearance battle after quarter time....save the first 10 mins of the final quarter. And low and behold, that was when Tabs and to a lesser extent Lobb were real threats.
During the middle part of the game, Tabs was forced to lead up the ground...mainly wing to half forward, in which he still managed a number of contested marks. His workrate for this is topnotch , and is often called to do this particlarly when Fyfe is off the ground or is being well tagged.
I dont think they manged to control him that well at all, it was just a weight of numbers thing.
Conversely, our undersized and under experienced defence copped the brunt going the other way. They did well but the dam wall had to burst, and while I dont think Kennedy wouldve kicked 4 with a Hambling and or Pearce on the job, I think the dam wall may well have still burst.
As much as I hate to say it, I think Notacluey(the Sandi lung puncturer), gave them a significant edge after quarter time and that was the stark difference.

Yes, centre clearances. No one wants to talk about it because it means saying something nice about NN (and Yeo). And there is not much we can do about it, although Fyfe would have been handy.
