Geelong wants to trade draft picks to move into top 10.
"Geelong has its best draft haul in two decades and it wants to make it even stronger by moving into the top 10 next week via a pick swap. Will a rival help with a trade?

The Cats, who have picks 14, 17, 24 and 36, have held preliminary talks with several clubs about bundling up multiple picks in exchange for a single-figure selection."

I was just wondering if a scenario like offloading our pick 7 for their 14 & 24 would put us in a better position to get more top talent. They burn 300 points for getting a top 10 pick and we gain by getting another pick in early 2nd round?

Is this a dumb idea?

Hi Sox, we read it, but in a very even draft (after the top 3) with a lot of WA talent on offer, I would prefer to trade down for more picks in the top 30. I mentioned at the time that our trading strategy seemed to be to secure two picks before the Henry bid then ensure we have enough points to match any bid after our pick 10. IF (and it’s a big IF) a bid comes before pick 10, I’d like to think our list managers have a trade already agreed to with either GC or Gelong to move down the order and secure another top 30 pick.

Pick swap deals are already taking place. Here's what's happened overnight...

"PORT Adelaide will enter this month's NAB AFL Draft with a bumper hand after landing a third first-round selection in a pick swap with Brisbane on Monday.

The Power have moved picks 29, 71 and a future-first round selection to the Lions and received picks 16, 52, 55 and 72.

It leaves the Power with picks 12, 16 and 18 after moving out selection 29 to avoid having it absorbed in an expected bid for father-son prospect Jackson Mead, who is set to fall in the mid-to-late second round."

Not bad.

Not sure I’d do that trade, they must think they are going to finish in the top 4 to give up next years first round pick to move from 29 to 16 in this years draft.

I think the whole pick swap thing is a load of BS that just opens the door for exploitation of the draft process.

I think the AFL have turned a simple process into a complex one for the sake of staying relevant when no games are being played.

Already they have closed the door on the loophole used by Sydney last year, no doubt some clever recruiters have already worked out another way to exploit the system.

They might not rate next years draft or what picks will be 'live' as most of the talent looks to already be tied to clubs through academy/father-son selections in 2020.

They could also be targeting someone who will likely fall around that pick this year with a pretty even group for the next 10 picks outside of the top 3 this year. If they can nab someone who falls through, they could see that as the equivalent of a pick in the 4-10 region while still landing Meade midway through the second round.

It's probably a win for both clubs. I wonder if Freo have spoken to them about 12 and 16 for our 10.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Not sure they’d go for that Biz, but I think we could get 16 & 18 from them for pick 10.

The way NicNat was slobbering all over Jackson on last night's news I think the Weagles are considering bundling up their remaining picks 43 & 91 in a deal for Melbourne's number 3.

Not so much a straight swap, there will be other minor picks involved to balance it out but picks in the 50's are fine to pass around. If a bid for Henry comes at 8/9, we'd be silly not to ask the question at least.

It's just happened again... Giants to give up two first-round picks for No.4

"GREATER Western Sydney will move up to pick No.4 in a major pick swap with Adelaide.
The Crows will receive the Giants' pick No.6 and their future first-round pick as part of the deal to slide back two spots."

Apparently the pick-swap madness ends this Friday.

Not great for us as our pick 7 is now pick 8 unless Melbourne bid on Green.

Our pick 7 is still pick 7 as both picks swapped, 4 & 6, are above our pick 7. The other first rounder swapped was GWS 2020 first round pick. The only way we can head off an early Henry bid is to get inside the top 5 but it's still all hypothetical because a bid by Melbourne, GWS, Adelaide, Sydney or Carlton may still not eventuate. And with our strong hand in next year's draft of Academy and father/son picks I'm not sure how many 2020 picks we are willing to sacrifice in an attempt to improve our stance in this year's draft.
