In the coaching list in that article it has this...

Marc Webb: Development coach (midfield) and skill acquisition manager.

WTF is a skill acquisition manager? And if he has held this role before he certainly hasn't gone out and acquired many of them.

Bloody Sandi taking a part time ruck job. Is this a case of more jobs for the boys Shane? or could it be he is the best man for the position?

Nothing like cutting into a discussion on business ethics with the argument that it's ok to adopt poor management practices because you've seen someone else doing it. It's not best practice in the world of management to hire your mates. If you can't even accept that then I can only assume you've moved on from hanging out with Duffield to the Quartermain family.

If you read through the Switkowski report into Essendon, you'll notice several mentions of poor hiring and recruitment practices, roles that were not clearly defined or shifted rapidly without records being kept and people out of their depth.

But if you want to take it back to Michelle Cowan. She's more than qualified to be a full time assistant at an AFL club but she can't find work. Nor can any other women. Not many black men either.

But the AFL gave Brad Scott an undefined administrative role, with a starting salary in the region of half a million dollars.

Don't be concerned about the lawns. I'm sure Shane Kersten won't get picked up in the pre-season draft.

I am not entirely certain I said or even implied it was okay to adopt poor practices just because you have seen someone else do it.

And I might have missed something but Cowan didn't appear to cover herself in a great deal of coaching glory. Our women's team tactics and approach under her did not bear fruit and seemed ill-advised if not entirely inappropriate. Simple **** like where and when to effect the switch meant a lot of turnovers that hurt exponentially more in lowscoring contests.

She got a head coaching position, the company way. She just wasn't very good.

If you reckon blokes who hang around football clubs for in excess of 10 years, achieving highly at what they do, aren't absorbing sufficient info and insight to pass onto other younger blokes, then you are completely over-rating pedagogic practice and ignoring or undervaluing the way respect is earnt in high performance environments.

I don't reckon Michael Walters has done any coaching courses or immersed himself in the language and thinking of corporate culture, but I reckon he's a leader and a teacher on the track and on the paddock. And I reckon people listen to him.

Will do.

Oh, and Stephen O'Reilly stood down after reaching the club’s constitutional limit of 10 years as a director not because of Dillon.

(Whether getting Dillon was a good idea is yet to be determined. BUt that whole thing serves as a great example of why you can't apply to footy the same "ethical" rules as you seem to believe apply in the business world.

Dillon was 2 AFL games and a change in the rules about WAFL service away from being father-son and no-one wants the romance of that to disappear.

Not something you see in the business world though, I am sure.)

It doesn't matter where else you see it. That's not how ethics work. It's not a race to the bottom.

The AFL is a community organisation. It should hold itself to a higher standard than a private business with poor management practices. They should aspire to do things well and work to achieve that, and set the standard. They've got money and resources and goodwill and a civic duty to be open and fair.

And I'd like to see the father son rule die. There's nothing romantic about it if you're the kid who misses out because another kid's dad has connections. .

Just to be clear, I think Michelle Cowan is an assistant coach of the Evils AFLW side.

I am aware of the concept of objective morality. I am also aware of the complex and often contradictory nature of the AFL, You were saying, relatively recently, that it was part of the entertainment industry. Is it a business when it suits you and a community development organisation when it suits you?

Is it an exemplar of all that is right and true in the world or a game?

I am saying there's actually nothing unethical about appointing your mates if your mates know what they're doing. I am also saying that teaching effectively is best done with an awareness of the needs and requirements of those being taught.

When Chris Connolly appointed his mate, Dr Kevin Ball, (after being appointed by his mate, Cameron Schwab), there was no real question as to his credentials. It was more to do with his authority.

The AFL is, like many places, a closed shop. There tend to only be 18 (or small multiples of 18) of any one thing at any given time and a self-selecting pool to draw from. It's not very fair.

And that's a shame but the essential nature of a geographical/tribal-based sporting competition is at odds with general concepts of "fairness".

I knew you'd be opposed to father-son. Are you against zones?

Because if you remove all of the "tribal" elements as you chase some giddy unicorn called "fairness," I don't really know what you will have left. Franchise A vs Franchise B.

Not something I want.

I have other questions about some of your points. It's ruining the flow but I think they're important.

*North Melbourne are contractually obliged to pay Brad Scott in 2020. Where does the money that North Melbourne would use to pay Brad Scott come from?
*Do you think Michelle Cowan is not getting paid to be the AFL’s High Performance Coach / Mentor for the Female Coach Academy?
