Draft bolter

Unlikley to be available at 7 now according to this. Sorry about paywall.

"...Melbourne and Adelaide have shown a willingness to trade their top five draft picks as WA ruck prodigy Luke Jackson continues to firm as an early selection next month.

The Demons (pick three) and Crows (pick four) hold selections that will shape the top 10 of the national draft, with Gold Coast set to select gun Victorians Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson with the first two picks.

Fremantle have been urged to trade aggressively into the top five to avoid missing out on Jackson and could have the opportunity through Melbourne or Adelaide if their interest in the exciting ruckman is strong enough.

Recruiting sources said Jackson’s draft range, with picks as they stand, was three to seven but pick swaps on draft night could change it.

If the Dockers try to trade their pick seven or 10 into the top five, they could have competition from GWS.

The Giants are attempting to get their first pick ahead of a potential bid on academy prospect Tom Green, which is expected to come from Sydney at pick five.

Rival recruiters expect the Giants would then use their top-five selection on Jackson if he was available.

Carlton are also interested in the ruckman and will meet with him in Perth in the next fortnight. But it is unlikely they would be able to snare him with their pick nine.

Former West Coast and North Melbourne tall Drew Petrie has been an influential figure in Jackson’s development this season, working one-on-one with the teenager on his ruck craft.

The partnership was organised by AFL academy coach Luke Power, with Jackson also working one-on-one with former WA State 18s coach and ex-West Coast player Andrew Lockyer.

Jackson also trained with the Dockers late this season..."

Who is urging Fremantle to do this, Colin Young? Jackson is not the priority. You've got Darcy. Get a big bodied mid and a skilled small forward. Kemp and Henry. That'll do nicely.

Don’t buy into the hype of going all out to bring ‘local’ talent into the club. Yes he is and will be a good player but get the best available and if they happen to be from WA that’s a bonus. We haven’t lost a huge deal of players leaving due to homesickness. Neale and Hill left for other reasons.

Yeah, I don't subscribe to throwing away our draft hand to get higher up the order for Jackson. If he's available at our pick then great. If he isn't then there are other good kids around who will be quality players.

The priority should be getting as many high end picks into the squad as possible rather than selling the farm for one bloke who might be well inclined to come back home to Freo in a couple of years anyway.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Yeah we don't really need Jackson, but I can see the possible upside. The main thing to worry about is an early bid for Henry. Might be a good time for him to get into a bar fight or something. Then we can take him under our wing with a late pick and try and straighten him out.

If Jackson gets taken before our pick, that means there will be another pretty handy prospect available to us. Don't get sucked into the "we must have Jackson" con.

I tend to agree about taking it as it comes inside the top ten, just reporting in.

But I am going to flag our ruck stocks are vulnerable, its Darcy, Lobb, and Meek. Darcy appears durable, but it is a big ask. He missed 11 games last season. Rucking Lobb is robbing Peter to pay Simon- although he could take hitouts forward to lessen the load on Darcy- and he missed 7 games last season. I don't want to break him again. Meek is a fair way off, to be fair. Another rucking option on the list makes sense to me.

I like Jackson and would take him with our first pick but wouldn’t trade up to guarantee. To be honest I think Melbourne and Adelaide are talking up their own interest because they are hoping for a “can’t say no” deal from GWS or FREO. Don’t buy into it, hope Melbourne keep pick 3, bid on Green then take a vic mid and we should be sweet.

While everyone is gushing over Jackson, we'll just step in and nab Ash or some other future champ.
No need to lose our 2 top 10 picks over this.

They're bluffing - speaking out loud about picking up off the discard pile because the Bellymeister is squinting over the hand he's holding.

Sure, pick up the jack you fool, Belly's going to slap down an ace.

I really want Jackson and if he is still available when it comes to our first pick then we should take him BUT WE MUST ensure that we get Henry and there are enough very good footballers in top 12-15 available that we can still get a potential gun if Jackson is gone. Robertson, Taylor, Rivers from WA, maybe Ash and there's a chance that Brodie Kemp may slide if you don't mind punting on a guy who's not going to play until late 2020 but looks like being a star when he's right. Then again Sturt and Valente didn't see much game time this season.

I agree let’s not get sucked in to this Jackson bs.
He is a 199 cm ruckman not a great forward who can ruck.
We need decent mids and if someone takes Jackson early then that leaves some really good mid kids for us. Also we don’t need to unnecessarily target wa kids unless they are nearly as good.
Ash that half back flanker has star all about him and if Melbourne pass him up could be the same mistake they made with notacluie years ago. Same with Sydney targeting the wa captain at 5, good player no doubt but at 5 there are some better mids

Hang on, is this the same newspaper (and I use the term loosely) that was telling us we'd have to do something special to snare Henry? Can they make up their minds? Do we want Jackson or Henry?

We want both but in order to trade picks to get lower enough to get Jackson we may still miss Jackson and possibly jeopardise our chances of getting Henry. I'm not sure if that's possible, we should still get Henry but miss out on other targets?
