New system

Members can nominate and then the club appoint their preferred candidate...because the elections were a bit of a popularity competition.

Old boys club or public celebrity election. Which is better?

I suspect there’s more to it than creating a long list that Dale can select from.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes.

On the whole, there seems a positive vibe to the approach to emerging from a pretty dark hole the club’s been digging for itself for years. filibustering aside, I’m largely impressed by the president taking the bull by the horns and putting himself in front of the members in a visible way. It’s been sorely lacking and hidden under a blanket of cockburncentralwestedness for too long.

This is rubbish. So instead of the members being the one's who elect someone to represent them on the board, the board choose their mate. Effectively, they just straight up pick whoever they want that will do what they're told opposed to rigging the member election with former players who will do what the board tell them.

This is actually outrageous and a continuation of the Steve's lack of heart and soul. Surely they can't do this?
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Also setting up a members panel selected from the members (dont know how) to advise on membership stuff.

Trying to put the "F" back into Fremantle.

"Ok, let's get a new Bored member. Where's that list of nominees? Wow, look at them all, there's gotta be hundreds - hey look, one of them is Peter Mann!"

Yeah nah polly. It's the members who seem to keep electing past players in this current scheme. Maybe by changing the way it's done we might get people who aren't past players. Or maybe not. Either way, you've gotta try something because the current system doesn't really give you a member's representative. It's not working.

Could not be worse than the system which gave us Rosich, Harris & Lyon.

The members didn't give us those people Raglan, that was the board.

The solution is not letting past players run in place of members. If they want to be a board member, then they should go through the WAFC and be appointed by them.

The member positions should be representative of the members and their interests. The board deciding on those people opens things up to even more bias decisions with less accountability than before. At best, the board will need to be very transparent with their selection criteria to eliminate evidence of bias. I don't see any chance of that happening though.

My point exactly, Biz, Could not be worse than that system.

It is though, they don't have to cherry pick players to run against the members anymore where the members can influence things. The board can get their best yes man to nominate and they'll rubber stamp it without the members having any sort of a say. That's worse.

Why should a past player, who is a member, have to
go via the WAFC to get on the board?

Boards need to have a balance of skills and experience.

Elected positions are generally a lottery (University boards are a classic example, with staff, students and alumni holding positions and often causing chaos)

A transparent and well thought out process for nomination and appointment is a great idea for better governance but needs to be implemented properly.
