TOPIC: One step back, for two steps forward

Hey, I'm not the one saying we can't possibly speculate on what KPI's a coach has to meet. This is a place for talking crap about football, it's all opinion and conjecture.

You only need to read the Peel post and see what people have to say about those pushing for a game and Sturt is definitely not one of them. He hasn't done anything to deserve a call up. Banfield and perhaps Watson are the only regular contributors and as we've seen even when called up Banfield is used in a defensive forward role instead of a midfield role where he is playing so well at Peel.

A bit tough on Colyer, ran hard was in and under, he’s not big enough to play that role. Gave off some clean passes. It can be hard to play well in a WAFL team when you’re having to do what is not your natural game. I would prefer him to Schultz, his confidence is shot but he’s got more upsidein my opinion.

I thought Schultz was quite effective last night :)

Given the fact that Lyon has ousted anyone in the coaching panel who has spoken against his coaching methods, I am prepared to conjecture that the Barlow, DeBoer et al delistings may be due to their dissatisfaction with the Lyon game plan. I would stress that this is only conjecturing, but it hardly seems worth the effort of stressing that, given the stress we have been put under.

I'm not entirely upset by our re-building progress. This year it's been (probably) one more game, a much lower "points against", and maintaining the "points for" under considerable adversity. This suggests that next year, it's back to the finals with a young team and a 4-5 year window of opportunity. Melbourne supporters can't say that.

All it suggests to me is that you'll buy this bridge I'm selling.

Is that the bridge to nowhere?

Steve already sold us that one.

Sorry dd but why is it that when you're crap, there are comparisons to someone equally or more crap? Why not comparisons to someone better or improving which is what we should be striving for?
If you're satisfied with this year you'll swallow anything imo.

Hold Bradley to his remaining two years - his girlfriend leaves him, problem solved. Simple solution.

I think the sad part of the last few seasons is that we have become everything opposite to what Ross Lyon expressed when he first came to the club.

So, instead of being a "no excuses club", all we are these days are excuses.
Excuse 1: Our disposal is poor
Excuse 2: Our taller forwards are all injured.
Excuse 3: We can't cover for Neale in the midfield
Excuse 4: We have a young list

Instead of being an "Anywhere, anytime team", we basically can lose at home as easily as we lose away.
Instead of accepting the challenge each week, we shirk the challenge.

If you look at the Bulldogs, they are eerily similar to us, but they are genuinely living the above mantra(s).

No Stringer, no Higgins, no Caleb Daniel, no Dale Morris, no Wallace, no Tom Boyd!, no Libba!, no Liam Picken!,
No problem. just recruit well and develop the others on the list.

So yes, when you look at all the stats, we should have easily beaten St Kilda, Carlton and Essendon, but we cannot score. Ross Lyon has the ability to extract maximum effort from his charges, but he seemingly does not have the ability to inspire a player to be his best self. This is key.

Maybe next year with a healthy list, none of the above will matter, but I think we missed an opportunity when Taberner and Hogan went down - we might have promoted a young key forward from Peel (and maybe inspired him)

While I understand the rational behind the desire to do a “proper rebuild” concentrating on bringing in the best possible players from the draft instead of trading in for the short term someone like Kelly, I always just end up thinking “we’ll if it’s going to take another 4-5 years, why keep Fyfe?” We’d probably be able to extract picks 1&2 (if the AFL give them a priority pick) from Gold Coast, go to the draft with picks 1,2,5 plus whatever we get as compo for S Hill and a likely first round pick for B Hill. Old man Walters can be captain coach and lead us to the promised land.

Did anyone tell Hawthorn there were premiership windows?

They're too busy being well run and coached to wait for such things to roll around. They might be having a poor season, but would anyone bet on them bottoming out like Freo do?
