Feeling quite nostalgic I rummaged through the son's bedroom to see if I could find our personal bit of Sandiland's memorabilia. [Son] was out and I was a bit worried about what I might come across in a 19 year olds bedroom but I was on a mission. It didn't take long, sitting on the top shelf of the cupboard - there it was! The following is a note I made for my son at the time. "Sunday 6 August 2006 Rd 18 FRE v HAW. Dad & [son] went to see Freo take on Hawthorn. Freo won & at the end of the game, Dockers players went to the boundary & handed footballs to the young fans. Dad saw Sandi heading his way to the wing. Sandi bounced the ball & looked up into the stand & saw dad waving in his Dockers jacket. Sandi lined up & booted the ball up into the stand, over the outstretched fingers of the people in the corporate box in front of us, & straight into dad's arms. Sandi & JLo who was with him looked up to see dad hand the ball to [son]. Dad gave Sandi the thumbs up & both looked pleased and walked off. [Son] had the biggest grin - like the cat that had just swallowed a canary. Everyone around us was pleased & shook dad's hand. [Son] had been asking dad for ages if we could move our seats down below because he wanted to get something and the only people who ever did were down at ground level."
The thing about Sandi's kick was that our seats were alongside the video screen (railway side) with the commentary boxes immediately behind us. Kick too hard and you hit the glass.
We got Sandi to sign the footy some weeks later but didn't tell him that this was the ball he kicked into the stand.
Thank you Sandi for the years of enjoyment you have brought to everyone who supports Fremantle. I wish you all the best for you and your young family in the future and yes - Go Gecko Contracting!
Freofan, that game was my 2 boys first Freo game as well, they loved it, 1 7yo and 1 4yo, the 4 yo was dancing up and down the steps behind the city end rfp pointpost to ACDC after the siren, great day.
