I’ve only ever coached underage school teams so I can’t pretend to know the complexities of managing an AFL team. Given the focus on the head coach and the large amount of money that they get paid I can only assume that it is all consuming, however, some things appear to not be that complex.
“Getting back to basics” appears to be a common refrain whenever a team hits difficulties and it is certainly something we have been asking for over a long period of time. We have no shortage of effort but developing skills and hitting forward targets seems to be an obvious shortcoming.

Fear no more!! Our top men are on to it! Apparently this shortcoming has now been identified and we are working on it this week. That’s right, a whole week of focus. That should do the trick.

Coach Ross Lyon spoke yesterday about midfielders missing forwards like Jesse Hogan several times when they were out on leads against the Tigers and Tucker said training this week had been geared towards getting better connection with forwards.

“It has been a big focus this week and we have a training session today when we will work on it with specific drills,”

I often wonder how skilled Hawthorn were, I think they were above average in their skills but excelled in ensuring not many had to make really tough kicks most of the time.

I think we need to work on how we make sure the ball carrier has better options around the ground.

My CV re footy coaching is briefer than even WTBs.

But I was fortunate enough to get invited to a corporate do at the dockers through my super fund during the time of Connolly and had a long chat with Schwabby.

He gave me a run down on tactics and the wheels within the wheels. it was about making sure you had the ball in the hands of the right player at the right time and ensuring the opposition when in possession had it in the hands of the wrong player. For instance if you are playing us back then the opposition would allow Troy Cook to have the ball as they felt he was most likely to stuff up a kick, So what did Chris do, he had Cooky when we had the ball man up so he wasn't free while they were trying to make him free by running away from him, so Cooky would do what he did best stay near one of our better kicks and shepherd and tackle so they got the ball..

Wheels within wheels within wheels constantly spinning and intertwining. Enlightening chat it was

I think I ve gone grappa Simpson on this one..

No wonder we were crap in the Connolly era. That's making football way too hard, right there.

Few teams put their players in the wrong positions and all you're doing with sort of strategy is 2nd guessing the oppositions level of suckness.

You reckon we need a committee to report back on the idea?

The committee is focused on getting the new 2-match membership ready for market launch

Come on Yet I. It's still an idea. Getting it to work is down the track somewhere after the committee has met and done an analysis.
I also think due diligence and KPI's May need to be thrown around.

This latest club coaching initiative reminds me of when we were informed that the club would spend an extra 20 minutes a session (or was it a week) on skills. Seriously!! The club thinks it can change a 25 year olds skills with an extra 20 minutes or, in this case, a week if focus! Makes you wonder what they could have achieved with that pre season trip to Qld!

How much time do you need to spend a week improving the skills of a 25 year old professional footballer?

At the risk of this again, why do we need to spend so much money on the football department if a 25 year old professional has to organise his own training?

I don't want to point fingers but it's someone's job at Fremantle to train the players to play football on the weekends. Whoever that person is, needs to use their skills at training footballers and put them to use training Fremantle footballers to be better at the kicking and the marking and so on.

I'm not trying to make a clever point, I just don't know the answer.

Brad Hill is a 25 year old professional footballer and so is Matt Taberner. Do you spend the same amount of time for skills with both of them? I would think that Tabs could use a few extra sessions to bed down his goal kicking. I'm not sure an extra few hours a week is going to help B Hill much at this point.

But I would like them to spend a little more time working on how B Hill could kick it into M Taberner in the forward line. That wouldn't be considered 'skills' training, but knowing where each other are on the field would make their skills look a lot better.

It might depend on whether he is running at you or away from you ?
