TOPIC: The Youth Myth

It bugs me when the club has spoken of our rebuild and how we're a young side on the rise, who've finished bringing in youth. While we've turned over our list a great deal, quality youth is not what we've brought in most of the time yet it should be what drives a resurgence after a rebuild.

At present, it's the older heads carrying a bunch of middle aged players with few young players making it into the side let alone impacting the play. In almost every game we've played this season, we've had on the whole, a more mature side than our opponent and I don't think it was demonstrated better than yesterday afternoon.

The Tigers had a bunch of 21 and under players (many of whom impacted the game) including Bolton, Stack, Castagna, Baker, Balta, Ross, Higgins and Garthwaite. Supporting them were very few of the senior stars who should be teaching and carrying them through the season and yet they travelled across the country and belted us.

On the other hand our under 21 players included Cerra, Brayshaw and Cox who tried hard and I thought impacted the play as much as most of the middle aged players. However that's less than half the number of young players the Tigers who are in premiership contention played.

My worry is the rebuild isn't happening and we're being placed in a position where we sit around the middle/lower end of the table for a little while before completely bottoming out once again, having to institute another proper rebuild.

Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

And yet you were supportive of trading our first two picks in the last draft?

For the best part of a decade football has taken a shift. It's gone from contested ball to how you move the ball and how you set up to move the ball. You saw that on display
again yesterday.

Morgan thinks we lacked outside run and certainly we were flat. Have you noticed we keep getting flogged by Hawthorn? They're playing two or three kicks outside of the play. We dont have a method for when we win it.

Standing invite to come and join me up in the nose bleeds, it's real clear then.

The players are fine. Don't give the accountable wriggle room.

Rebuilds are not just turning over the playing list - out with the old and in with the new.

They are also about targeting the right players and then developing them. What we've seen so is a massive list turnover but instead of developing the new players skills, we are trying to turn them into copies of the players we replaced.

There seems to be no room for individual brilliance, no room for change to take advantage of conditions, no flexibility. Instead, we are building a new team of contested sluggers to replace the old team of contested sluggers.

Your fears are not without justification, Biz

I think I've had a pretty solid stance on maintaining top draft picks throughout the past few years including 6 months ago to get Rankine.

I was happy to turn Neale into Hogan though.

On a separate note (well, maybe not too separate), has anyone been watching SPS this season? That kid looks like a gun.

All I can compare this year's performance on was last year's and last year when we lost we were belted. This year so far we have lost by at most about 4 goals. Things seem to be getting better but true there are a lot more things to sort out going forward and I would like to see some of the speedier young player back in the mix to give them another crack at AFL level... Giro, The OWL and how bout this new guy Bewley?

Just as an example, Bewley was drafted in this year and will be talked up as more youth coming into the side when he gets his shot.

However he's not young (he's 24) and was drafted because we got rid of all of our good picks for other mature players. Effectively we bypassed kids with huge potential for a mature player which is not how you rebuild a team.

I tend to agree Bizkit, but I think continuity is important. Football is the sporting version of jazz played by a chamber orchestra. Games played together is as important as games played in total.

Our defence looks like a group of guys who know how to play together. Our midfield looks like Fyfe, Mundy and Walters doing their thing with a half-dozen other blokes trying to figure out where to stand (and currently Hill and Langdon standing outside doing nothing).

Our forward line looks like a bunch of guys who have never played with each other - because they haven’t.

I said before the season I thought our second half of the season would be better than our first half, just because it would take half a season to figure out our forward structure. I still think that’s true, but I’m also still worried about how much we’re asking of Fyfe, Mundy and Walters and whether they’ll play out the season.

If I was Hill or Langdon, I wouldn't want the bloody footy across the centreline either. When they get the footy, they have 2 choices, stand and wait for the forwards alongside them to get inside 50, with the attendant risk of being smashed by a couple of opponents, or kick for the boundary with the attendant risk of being penalised for deliberate out of bounds.

Other teams have new players in their forward line and have no problems adapting. Lynch is 2nd in the Coleman or similar wheras Hogan is getting more of his possesions up the ground. Stack is also new to that side and their forward line had no experience playing together due to the number of injuries they had.

Our biggest problem is, all we do is bomb the ball on the heads of our forwards and hope for a mark, they all jump for the same ball leaving the opposition team to get an easy ground ball and they run it out and cut through us with fast ball movement and score a goal.

We need our forwards to lead into three different spots giving our mids three clear choices and hope they choose the best option, one up the middle and the other two on the 45% angles, just after they lead the three smaller forwards should follow their designated forward to pick up any loose ball if they didn't mark it.

This is so simple I think that's all we want to see but I fear we'll never see it as long as Ross is the coach, his flooding style doesn't leave us the chance to use our forwards the way they should be used, we now have good enough forwards to win a high scoring shoot out ,lets use them properly Ross or move on so we can recruit a coach that will.
