TOPIC: Midfield Worries

There is Fyfe, Mundy and Walters and then daylight to another good midfielder.
Obviously didn't help not picking Blakely.
Hogan did better up the ground getting hands on the ball than most of our midfielders.
Tucker is average and will not get any better.
Brsyshaw and Cerra are not playing like number 2 and 5 draft picks. I see no real improvement from last year which is a worry.

I have no idea how the mid season draft works but I would be telling Shane Kersten and Scott Jones they both have long term injuries. Then the club should recruit a couple of midfielders from somewhere. But please, for the love of God, check that they can kick first.

Our in and under midfielders and ruck combo did well to get the clearances but there didnt seem to be a plan to get it to the next link. The outside runners for Richmond towelled us up, Hill was quiet, Langdon not his usual self. Richmond cleared it out of our centre half far too easily.
I think Blakely will help on his return, but we looked slow tonight, maybe that’s due to our poor skills with sudden turnovers - I’m not sure.
Sandilands, Ballas, Jones, there’s a few you could say you’re long term injured... Are there any more Stacks, Boltons or Kelly’s running around in the WAFL?

Hypen's point Sonareo: our runners looked tired from the get-go. Theirs - and there's a lot of them - looked sharp and well-positioned for the intercept.
I remember Ryan getting tackled and having to fire out a handpass to 2 waiting Richmond players. They seemed to know where the ball was going to go 2 plays before it got there. That, is confidence in your tactics and game plan.

The effect of all the hard work at training and effort in games is starting to kick in. But not the way Lyon planned for it to pan out.

They knew all day if they got the ball outside the numbers at the contest they would then get space and overlap, and were then able to execute. Concerning because this is what Hawthorn used to do with skilful execution of short possession.

I felt more and more disconsolate as I watched the game yesterday (confession: I left at the 18 minute mark of the 4th qtr). Richmond weren't just harder and quicker at the ball; more skilful with kicks and hand ball; they didn't just look fitter and better organised tactically. They were also braver. The sort of bravery that comes from self-belief and confidence in teammates. I saw at least 2 goals resulting from the ball being punched on, into a team mates hands, instead of taking possession and therefore risking a tackle. That quickness of thought and certainty made the overlapping ball movement much too fast for Fremantle's defensive structure to react to. It was something to admire, and yet I put my head in hands with despair, because I know my team, so full of highly skilled players, arguably the best squad the Dockers have ever assembled, suffer with a game plan that stifles all of those wonderful natural skills and spontaneity. So sad to watch, sometimes.

* apologies full being long-winded and Morgan-like, but I had to get that off my chest...

Fyfe was awesome yesterday. Something like 33 disposals and 25 of them contested. Kicked more goals than any of our forwards and couldn't have done anymore to inspire or lift his side.
I have big concerns though that our young midfielders are not developing at the rate needed to take the next step to give the support needed to Fyfe and Mundy.

CA, that's incredibly harsh on Brayshaw and Cerra they are getting there. Least of our problems.

Have a dip at our two wingmen.

And for all Cam Mac's faults, he would have been more use than Cox in helping our wingmen move the ball.

Usually in agreement Hypen but I think you're being harsh on Langdon and Hill. They didn't have good games yesterday, but have been amongst our best in other games this year.

As for Brayshaw and Cerra have you seen any improvement compared to last year? I haven't. What were their strengths they were supposed to have been drafted for and are they showing them? Would they have been in our best players at all this year?

Of course I want to see them playing well but I was hoping for more by now after playing 30 games. I also don't believe Cerra should be playing as a half back. Play him in the midfield. Any flair, dash or excitement player with great skills that we were expecting isn't being shown as he is becoming another of the Roly all effort players.

While we're at it, who remembers how pleased we were to pick up Wilson after seeing his run and booming kicking off half back when he was at GWS? Where's that now?

It's as if they don't have the license to do these things under Roly. No excitement for us.
