TOPIC: Disrespect

There seems to be a growing theme of Freo players showing disrespect not only to their teammates but also their leadership group, coaches and most importantly their fans. Hopefully this does not signal a “culture” problem. It is time the leaders and coaches grouped the team together, eliminated the bad seeds and find that hunger and passion that almost led a mediocre team to a flag based purely on heart and determination. Freo fans deserve more. We are close to the most passionate in the league and the purple pride is strong. We all need to band together to make this team great again

Heart and determination? We had the Brownlow Medalist and half a dozen all Australian players and we bloody well choked.

The culture problem the club has is the deification of management that blinds people to the mistakes they've been making. From the way they hire people, the stacking of the board, the power imbalance that sees decisions made in the interests of individuals over the club and the media first strategy when dealing with any problem.

There is a pattern of behaviour that starts at the top that has put Fremantle in a position where three years at the bottom of the ladder, without improvement or a change in methodology, is seen as a normal way to do business. That's the problem. That's why we continue to fail. Not someone getting done on a Saturday night.

I think its a given that Hogan disrespected his teammates, his (new) team and the chance he was given to stride clear of his difficulties and enjoy playing the game he obviously loves. On a different tangent, I think Ross needs to show some respect to his body and lose that gut - and maybe demonstrate to the players that he can sustain a programme too! There is a serious perceived undercurrent of a less than total commitment in attitude (respect) to the singular goal of finals and then trophy - as intimated by Lachie Neale. Peter Bell has a big task in front of him and I hope he can keep his own faith going to achieve some respect for Freo from the rest of the AFL.

Lyon has to go from being arrogant, he lost any right to that ages ago, to being a leader of action and positive outcomes.

The time for that starts now.

A fish rots from the head.

How else do you expect players to behave when a senior figure can get away with sexual harassing a fellow employee by way of a confidential settlement, and keep his job.

Speaking to fellow Freo supporters we are all gutted, although we may not have had huge expectations for our footballing year, we at least were looking forward to our new lineup rolling out. Well this isn’t going to happen it is hard to fathom just how disillusioned I feel right now.
I think it is high time that some respect is shown to the supporters and the club start genuinely addressing what is going on. They could start with some of those TBC’s on our injury list.
Just talk like humans and drop the jargonistic rubbish that is being thrown around.

It may even be worse than that, Matebe.

I think if you check the dates, not only was he not sacked as he should have been but he got a 5 year contract extension after that incident.

What reputable organisation would behave that way?

People would knock Rick Hart for the appearance on TV but there was our last club president who cared about the supporters and the last one with a skerrig of integrity. The one we are burdened with now is out of his depth and has gone completely missing in action.

I am presuming that Lyon and Rosich are now so inexplicably tied as to have become a pair. That is, when Lyon goes so will Rosich. Probably a few others in senior management as well.
On reflection, the time to have done all this was at the end of 2015 when a number of quality off field people like Kirk left. There seemed to me at the time that they could see where the team and club was at. Freo had come close, but it probably wasn’t going to happen. This was the time when Fremantle needed a strong board and executive to make tough decisions. That was the time for a new ceo, president and coach. Re-signing Lyon at the time was understandable but giving him 5 years was very poor decision making. The club has blundered forward in such an incoherent manner the last few years that they have lost valuable time in turning things around. There are other issues as well obviously. The culture is very poor, with blowout losses a regular Fremantle thing over it’s history. The recruiting has been, at times, inexplicably bad. There is a whole generation of middle tier aged players missing from the club because of the 2012-2016 drafting disasters. The injury list is never ending.

I don’t think Ross Lyon can be blamed for all of the clubs current problems. Really, it has been across the board failures at all levels. Even the clubs marketing is tone deaf. The week after the grand final they posted on Instagram as if nothing had just happened and Fremantle were steaming ahead to a bright new future.

There are no easy answers. Personally, I would like to see a heap of people lose their jobs but how much faith do any of us have in the club picking the right people to replace them? The ceo position should be a highly prestigious position in this state. We end up with spivs and used car salesmen. The poor coach who replaces Lyon will have almost nothing to work with from a playing list perspective and will thus have very little goodwill from the fans. I don’t buy into the belief that this is a good list being badly coached. It is a poor list being poorly coached.

I have no idea where they go from here. I suppose e few early wins might hide the problems for a bit but there is no doubt to me the Fremantle football club is as far away from success as at any time in its existence. But the problems and mistakes are all it’s own doing. It really should not be this hard.

Goodie, I do think Lyon can be blamed (along with Rosich) because he has not had the guts to stand down, or the intelligence to admit he is wrong in his coaching strategy , or the morality to guide the club to where we want it. Take your pick on which of the 3 he has failed at (or all 3 if you think that), but whichever way you look at it the buck stops with Lyon. He is the one (rightly or wrongly) guiding Freo down the path we are travelling. Rosich is just a figurehead and a joke.

Rick Hart would never have put up with the childish press conference platitudes, the abysmal injury record or the totally inept coaching strategies. He started in an era when Freo were given the brown end of the stick week in week out and worked his arse off to get us somewhere. He was a players man, hence the famous "down on the farm" sort out. Rosich hasn't got the guts to act in that way.

Jesse Hogan urged to ‘stop hanging around d---heads’ by AFL great David Schwarz
Schwarz said the Hogan situation should be a “watershed” moment for Fremantle as a club.
“if you cover up these things, if you hide behind whatever you’re hiding behind and you don’t address the issue, which is poor decision-making, poor choices, drug and alcohol decisions, your club is going to be garbage and it’s going to stay garbage,” Schwarz said.
