The one positive I took out of today's wipeout was the performance of Matt Taberner. He did almost exactly what we might have hoped for - almost, because he missed a couple of fairly easy goals. But in a losing team he managed to get 18 possessions, including 11 contested possessions, nine marks (5 contested) and 6 inside 50's. He worked hard up the field and gave us a target near goal, and laid a few great tackles (which went unrewarded by inept umpires). I daresay he may be better value than Kersten or even McCarthy, but I'm no expert.

In his presser, Roly gave Fyfe and Stephen Hill credit for their effort but ignored Tabs - what has he got against him? I am confused. No doubt Roly thought Danyl Pearce was solid in defence. Thank God he doesn't play favourites.

Swans got 5 or 6 goals from taking the ball away from a contest in which a Freo kick should have been awarded for illegal disposal/holding the ball, and 3 from push in the back in the contest. The first 2 goals in the second half were disgraceful decisions by the umpires. This happens every week, yet no-one is accountable. ( except the Freo players who "cant tackle" and "don't hold their ground in a contest".

Yeah go on, say the umpires didn't lose us the game. But in the close ones those decisions are still paid the same way, and they do lose us the game. B Hill had a free paid for a push in the back in our goalsquare, Buddy got away with 3 of those. Freo laid 2 tackles 15 out from our goal, ball dropped both times, no free, then Swans get goal at the other end.

They claim Fyfe and Neale are lazy for not running to contests. Pretty hard to run when you are dragging a 95 kilo lump of weight along with you. I watched some of the other games today, and we seem to be alone in consistently not having these frees paid.

Agree RM. Swans game plan relies on dropping the ball then going down on hands and knees over it and scooping out to advantage.

Tabs needs to play the rest of the season and a new contract.

It's not that Taberner hasn't shown he can play at AFL level. It's whether he can do it consistently beyond the 4 or 5 game bracket.

How can the poor guy play consistently beyond 4 or 5 when he only gets to play 4 or 5 games in a row ?

He gave us much more than either kersten or McCarthy on Saturday, providing the link up from the back half to the forward half consistently and holding a fair few contested marks in the process. I would like to see Griff played this week with Hodor spending 70% of his time forward to see how tabs goes as the second tall, Kersten would have to be dropped for this to happen though which seems unlikely.
I fear that Hodor may be getting pidgin holed as a stand alone ruckman which could mean next year he wastes playing at peel unless sandi is rested or broken, this would be a huge loss of development imho

We 've got a heap of other guys who can't play consistently past 4 or 5 games, in fact the majority of the team, so it doesn't seem fair to single out one player who doesn't get the same opportunities.

While we search for the next Pav (like the Australian Cricket Team searches for the next Shane Warne), play Tabs - long leads, contested marks, take a big defender, take the odd ruck contest, kick some goals.

Tabs is no superstar, but he's doing things we need that no one else in the team can do.

Just play the guy.

For the record, Taberner played 10 games in a row (rounds 2-11) in 2015, on his way to 15 games for the season. In 2016, Taberner played 11 games in a row (rounds 4-14), missed one game then played another four on the trot and tallied 17 games for the season.

There is no doubt that Tabs is frustrating. We know he can do it, but not if he will. He needs to be angry all the time. The angrier the better.
