And when you have solved this issue can someone tell me why with 2 mins to go and we're down 3 pts every Freo player is behind the football.

They had to bring in a rule to stop the coaches cheating by using the stretcher. I'd hate to think what the game would look like if they 'left the game alone'.

The modern game is thrilling, and for the most part rule changes have been to keep up with changes happening in the game. You get the odd confusing decision, but I dare say that's been the case as long as there have been umpires.

Well, it worked, didn't it?

(And unless by "we're" you mean Melbourne, we were up by 3 points)

Apparently, even Hayden Kennedy won't say the decision against Kersten was correct.

All he will say is there 'is an argument for it'.

Saints coach Alan Richardson called it the 'worst free kick in history'.

Hayden's fairly weak response was heavily mocked it seems. It's not hard to see why when Kennedy was too weak to actually state the decision was wrong. AFL, another acronym for pathetic.

If there's an argument for it, there's one against it. So it's a bad rule. We've got too many of them.

Yes Drubbing, we have, but that is how the AwFL wants it.

Regarding the fact we had everyone behind the ball, all teams do that, and once we won possession, our players were swarming forward, there was a Freo player in the first 3 in the race for the ball before it went out.

In the heat of the battle and with the margin that close, I still reckon that paying that as a deliberate was the right call. It was a pretty good kick but nonetheless he clearly wanted that result. I am surprised that there is such a stink about it. It is a long way from the worst 'deliberate' call there has been.

I would have thought the best possible and most probable outcome would be. Kersten was attempting to kick the ball forward for our players to run on from behind the footy and score therefore winning the game.
Surely this is open attacking football which is to be encouraged not penalised. I find any interpretation of a long kick towards the goal face as a deliberately defensive stalling action way too long a bow to draw.

There is a stink, Mellors, because all I want in our games is for the umps to get out of the way. The less visible the umps are, the better we go. And had Melbourne rebounded, got a goal and won the match on the basis of that decision, I would be absolutely spewing! Its just lucky that didn't happen.

I'm just surprised that deliberate out on the full hasn't yet been paid when Sonny kicks over the line between the 2 big sticks. Surely that was deliberate and on the full...

The rule was brought in to stop players handballing, soccering or knocking the ball over the line which slowed the game down and made for ugly viewing. Getting it out of bounds deliberately is a tactic which could be used by a team with a narrow lead to waste time and thwart the opposition from gaining possession. This should be penalised with the deliberate rule when it is as clear as day what the player was trying to do.

Booting the ball forward more than 40m and it trickling over the line does not fall into this category. The intention from Kersten was to get the ball forward not necessarily over the boundary. Maybe his intention was to get it over the line but can the umpire really be sure enough of this to penalise him?

The distance the ball is kicked must have some bearing on the decision........

Players can punch the ball out in a contest deliberately but this is seen as acceptable defensive play. I agree this shouldn't be judged as deliberate because punching a footy in a contest often results in a random outcome. Likewise booting a footy 40m can result in a random outcome and an umpire can never be sure what the intention of the player was.

If you cannot be sure what the intention of the player was how can you award a free kick for a deliberate act?

Well here's a solution!! Why dont we recruit players that can't kick and handball very far - or won't - ...and tell them all they should do is punch the ball when ever theres a contested situation, and do it to achieve "a random outcome" !

Problem solv-ed!! No more Deliberate Out of Bounds!!!

That'll help the umpy's and make it a more attractive game for the AwFL.

Urm....Er. ..?? .. Nah! ....Been there, done that... ! ..... Shouldn't do that......

In this case, the ball going out of bounds was the fifth best outcome. Better outcomes:
(i) Ball bounces through the big sticks;
(ii) One of our players runs forward and puts it through the big sticks;
(iii) One of our players running forward is beaten to the ball but is right there to lay the tackle (defender will be caught running backwards) and win the free kick to shoot for goal;
(iv) One of our players running forward is beaten to the ball but is right there to pressure the defender into conceding a deliberate free kick, allowing us a shot on goal.
I reckon, in Kersten's situation, a hoof up the ground can bring any number of positive outcomes, and if nothing else then 65m Melbourne would have to bring it back. Ridiculous free kick.

You're making the assumption that umpires can count past i)
