Interesting development in the 2017 Premiership market reported on Foxfooty, Fremantle in from 50-1 to 25-1 after most recent trade deals. All aboard guys!! Go Freo!

Gumnut Ive been saying all along that with our injured players back and a new look forward line aka McCarthy, Kersten, Yarran, Walters and Ballantyne with Fyfe / Bennell resting down there, now add two Hills and stir you are developing a team that will compete with the best!

I think it's got more to do with someone dropping 20k on Freo to win the flag.

We finished near the bottom, and have added a bunch of fringe AFL players? What's the betting market to finish 9th?

Good question Morgan but quite often fringe players are only so because they cant break into established sides. Hamling is probably the best example of this in recent times. A fringe player who can come into a side at finals time and dominate his position is probably not going to be a fringe player for long. We also had one of these fringe players who is now cementing his spot in the Geelong side.

Hopefully you're right. My fear is that in players like Kersten and Hamling we are simply replacing players like Yarran and SCOS - except we still have those players.

SCOS, for example, is a limited player who tries his guts out, and is capable of playing a role in a good team. And he can't get a regular game in team so I'm not sure if Hamling helps us.

Sometimes you can turn a fringe player into a very good player, but it tends to be if that player has one elite skill that can be used. I'm not sure that's true for players like Kersten and Hamling. They look to me to be solid footballers, but no more. But I confess I have't seen them play all that much.

If you take B Hill, I don't really rate him as a player (I probably would have preferred to have kept the pick), but he has elite speed. That is something we lack. If we can use him correctly, I think he can be a very good player for us.

I suspect we will become a very deep, but average team. But who knows, perhaps we can prove the weak link theory correct.

Well, thank goodness for that! Unbelievably great news just at the right time for Seat Rental Renewals to be finalised - I had better get my wallet out, FOR SURE!

I'd like to get a definition of fringe players, but the only players we've added so far were first choice selections when they were at the clubs they came from. I'd also be happy with some clarification of why Brad Hill isn't "rated", is that "rated" as a top shelf player or is it "rated", as a first choice player, or as an AFL player full stop?
;p

Good luck to the punter that got 50/1 on the Dockers - that was overs in the first place. Any guesses - Rick Hart?

RotV, the way I tend to think about teams is to split them into three categories, being: stars, very good players and role players. Out of 22 players a great team might have half a dozen stars, and maybe 8 or so very good players and 8 or so role players. If you're a role player, whether you get picked depends on the make-up of the team (as Mick B found out, it can happen to very good players too!).

Out of the players we've received (or might receive), I'd classify most of them as role players. One by one:

Hill
Many would consider Hill a 'very good' player, but I tend to think of him as a role player, who is selected because his pace was one thing Hawthorn lacked. I think he will be an automatic selection for us because we also lack pace. The trade is close to fair value but I'm not sure I'd trade an early second round pick for a role player unless we were in premiership contention.

Hamling
Seems a handy player who bounced around before latching on with Footscray. Took his opportunity in the finals, but history is littered (pardon the pun) with players whose talents have been exaggerated because they were a 'premiership player'. Again, probably a good role player, and I think there is always a role for his type of player. I just hope he isn't SCOS MkII.

Kersten
Does anyone think this guy will be anything other than a role player? Worth a punt as a fourth round pick, but I'd rather use that pick speculating on a ruckman.

McCarthy
I have no idea how good CamMac will be. I'm not 100% sure he gets selected in a GWS finals team. If he's a big, he'd be behind Cameron, Patton and Lobb, and if he plays a little smaller he'd be trying to edge out Stevie J and Greene and those types. Might sneak in as a mid-size forward. As previously discussed, we basically got him for nothing, so it's a good get. I think he'll be a Pav replacement if we only count the years from 2014 on.

The one thing that's in our favour in 2017 is the fixtures. Being in the bottom 6 teams, we should have a relatively easy draw. After playing all teams once, we'll play West Coast again. Then I'd suggest the following teams: Essendon, Carlton, Port, Collingwood and Richmond. So, with 12 home games, I'd be surprise if Roly don't get the boys firing like the Dogs did this year.

Ok Morgan I am going to have a crack at applying your logic to the Bulldogs premiership team under the criteria of stars/very good and role players. I will list without the inflated rating of having just won a premiership and rate them how they may have been rated at the beginning of the year.
Stars
M Bontempelli, T Liberatore, E Wood, J Stringer, J Johannisen,
Very Good
L Hunter, L Picken, J McRae, C Smith, M Boyd, D Morris, L Dahlhaus
Role Players
T Boyd, T Dickson, T McLean, Z Cordy, C Daniel, S Biggs, J Dunkley, J Hamling, F Roberts, J Roughead

I personally think I am being generous in ranking Johannisen and Liberatore as stars. I see stars as players clearly in a league of their own or with extended periods of high performance. D Morris and M Boyd would qualify but until a couple of years ago were looking like they might almost be finished. T Boyd is listed as a role player because up until 6 weeks ago he wasn't even getting a game.
In my opinion the Western Bulldogs have just won a premiership with a team of role players some of whom are now much more than that.
I find it hard to believe that so many people are willing to take the form line of last year to be the true indicator of where we are as a team and disregard the previous 4years. I am as guilty as anybody for getting despondent and having a rant this year but I think there is plenty of reason for optimism and can't see anything at all to be critical of the club during this trade period.
