TOPIC: Tim English

I was listening to draft news today and they said Fremantle are all over English, and they believe they can get him with pick 7 so they were willing to lose 3. They have enough mids so they will look for key position this draft not best available

I reckon you are right. We are signing up Zlarke for 3 years (sweet baby jesus!) which should be how long English will need to develop.

You'd be nuts not to take SP-S, but if he's gone I would take Bolton over English. That's just me.

Recruiting rule number 1 do not take ruckmen with first round picks , When in doubt refer to rule number 1

Take the best player available. If we can't use him, then someone else will and will have someone we want and we can trade.

They're absolutely right to take English first. They have mids everywhere and no ruckman to speak of after Sandi goes.

I saw him play and wasn't impressed. Any background on why he's rated so highly would be appreciated. I just see Clarke/Moller when I think of English.

English was also eligible for last season's draft so is a year older than everyone else.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I'm with Polly on this one, if SPS is gone I'd take Bolton ahead of English. He's a son of an ex Docker, his recent development was evident in the U18 Allstar game where matched it with McLuggage and all the top prospects and he could be ready to go next season but that game raised questions over English when he was jumped all over by Esava R and I think he is 3-4 years away from being ready. There will be other good big man prospects available later in this draft and we need to show restraint to make sure we get the right player from our first pick.

I agree - those young ruckmen take time and its a bit of a lottery. Don't want to be sitting here in two or three years time wishing we had taken him though (Lobb).
If we do go with him then Zac Clarke becomes important or we look to somebody with a bit of experience (not Petrie type experience) but a Nankervis type or something similar. Rush a big guy in and when they are as skinny as English then they can break down a la Kruezer style.

How about Picks 72 & 78 for Nankervis. Don't Sydney have Academy players to pick up that they need picks for?

I don’t know much about English, and I don’t know what Bondy’s spreadsheets say, but I wouldn’t be using a top 10 pick on a ruckman. If you look at elite ruckmen, very few come from top 10 picks. Below is a rough list of All Australian ruckmen from the last decade. Only one of them was a first round pick and three were rookies. I'd be more inclined to take a few flyers at big coordinated blokes at the end of the draft, and try and turn them into ruckmen.

Gawn – pick 34
Goldstein – pick 37
Sandilands – rookie
Minson – pick 20
NicNat – pick 2
Cox – rookie
Jamar - rookie

Yeah look for 200cm plus big men that played lots of Basketball when they were juniors, they generally have good coordination, speed, leap and tap work skills. What about a few international rookies? You can add them to your list without using picks cant you? Chuck three or four on and see what happens.
