TOPIC: Lobb / McCarthy

What do you reckon we have to give up to get them both to Perth (and to outbid the budgies)?

Pick 3 and ???

- future pick
- whatever we get for Mayne

And don't go throwing up names of fringe players who hardly get a game for us or who are in our bottom half dozen.

If this season has shown west coast anything it is that without Kennedy they are stuffed. As a consequence we are going to be paying more.

I think pick 3 on its own gets it done. Unfortunately there is one bad thing about Nik Nat going down its that the Slime have entered the race. They will come hard as well but I think we have more cash in the bank and will throw the cheque book at him. I think he should be our number 1 priority.

So, for Lobb, it's a simple enough choice then - be the No 1 ruck at Freo on big money or Nic Knackerdknee's understudy for years to come, earning a lot less?

There's two ways of looking at this:

i. Lobb goes to the Eagles because, even if he is Naitanui's understudy, I doubt he'll play more than a couple dozen more games.
ii. Lobb doesn't go to the Eagles, because Kim Hagdorn says he will.

Lobb can also play as a power forward. Eagles would love to have him.
For all the Nic Nat knockers over the years he may be better..
The problem they will have is coming up with a suitable trade.

We need him badly and need to sell to him as being our number 1 ruckman for the next 10 years.
Get Fyfe on the phone to him.
Pick 3 for Him and McCarthy would be a great swap for us.
Sheridan can go too if they are stubborn and if we can get their pick inside top 10 that would be great too.
If we can somehow end up with Cammac, Lobb and say a pick 10 it would be fantastic.

I must be getting old and jaded. Perhaps it is too many years of reading posts that go along the lines of "let's go out and get (insert name here)".
I'm now at a stage where I simply assume that it will all come to nothing. Inevitably these posts have common threads, i.e. that these players only want to come to Fremantle, or that their current clubs are not going to play hardball and insist on top picks, or that we can give up our B graders to get an A grader.
IT.... NEVER... HAPPENS.
Short of Cam McC's tactic of giving up a year of footy to move over (and even then there is a chance that WCE will nab him), we have got our work cut out for us. To make it worse, our boys at the top have shown that they have difficulty selling a future at our club to prospective trades (especially if they are over 190cm tall).
Good luck getting anything (other than Cam) without feeling a bit of pain.

Agree. There is also every chance gws won't entertain any deal at all for Lobb.

Possible, but they may be a bit gun-shy after missing out on 2 first round draft picks for Cammac last year.

Now they'll be lucky to get a 3rd round pick for him or he'll be the 'steak knives' we get with any trade for Lobb.

Just depends how much the ghost of Sheeds still influences their decision making (i.e. f&%k up Freo wherever possible).

Red Alert. Do not trade our No. 3 draft pick. Secondly, Cammac is Freo bound. How that happens is possibly a late pick and a player. Lobb won't be going anywhere. If he does he'll likely go the budgies. Why? Because GWS won't deal with Freo. Cammac is a different scenario. Now with players departing, I'd say, Mayne and Ballas will have currency. So we'd get draft picks for them. These might be used to strengthened our draft position. I'm more interested in gauging who'll Freo pick as Pick 3. Better still who would we like to help us get the holy grail.

Pick 3 has to be someone over 6' 6". If you can get Lobb for pick 3 (and I'm not sure you can), it's a no-brainer. Why use pick 3 on an untried ruckman/power forward who might take 3 years to develop when you can have a ruckman/power forward who has already proved himself at AFL level and has 10 years of his career in front of him?

If Lobb is not on the table I'd be going with English from South with pick 3.

I don't understand why we would question giving up pick 3 for Lobb, high picks don't come with guarantees ie Tom Boyd, Colon Sylvia. I can't see GWS giving him up for pick 3 anyway, because they have KPP/Ruck that has shown he can perform at the level.
McCarthy offers the ability to bundle up, we can inflate what we give for McCarthy to sweeten pick 3 for GWS.
If the rumours are true and he wants to come back west this may give us an advantage over West Coast. Hopefully all 3 parties can act responsibly and get a deal that sits well for all involved.
Having said that Walter is probably right.

I reckon we should take Andrew McGrath with our first pick and get Luke Strnadica or another tall in the second round (hopefully compensation pick) if Tim English is already gone.. Pick 3 for Tim English wouldn't be the right thing to do.. Andrew McGrath might help us actually bring the ball out of defence (which seems to be a our biggest problem) I reckon we could bring Apeness through as a ruckman.. Don't worry about getting Brad Hill - just use our picks I say..

Although I would definitely give up pick 3 for Lobb if we can.
