TOPIC: What were you doing 20 years ago...

... watching the Roys play their last game at Subi against our lot.
At a time when AFL clubs weren't behaving as corporate bodies, when they still had 'rusted on' members and respect for footy culture, and when a club's history meant something, I was proud of the way our club ensured that the Roys went out with some dignity. While the respect was clear on the day, it's nice to see this reference (in the article below) to the club's efforts:

And for many Roys fans, it honestly was the end of the world. That last ‘home’ game was a gut-wrenching prelude to the totally avoidable indignity that followed a week later, when despite intimations from the Dockers that they’d be willing to shift the fixture, Fitzroy’s league-mandated funeral against Fremantle took place at Subiaco, as far as one could physically and spiritually be from Brunswick street or the Junction.

Yes was there too with a tear in my eye for my Dad's old team (I was raised on stories of Bunton Snr, quinlin, the 1944 premiership etc). Rather than put flowers on dad's grave I even sent $s over to try and keep them afloat.
Thanks for reminding me

Strange coincidence that this topic came up. Was in Melbourne yesterday, back today, talking with an Uber driver and we got talking footy as per usual. He said he didnt really barrack for anyone anymore since Fitzroy got shifted up north but when he heard I was a Docker mentioned he has a real soft spot for the Dockers given what the club did and how the supporters treated his club in that last game at Subi. Said he never forgot it. The lone bagpipe which frankly I cant recall said brought him to tears. I dutifully informed him that that was standard Dockers form, that by and large our supporters really understand the game and appreciate those moments. We can see and empathise with a good AFL shafting and he agreed and intimated there remains a kindred spirit between the old die hard Fitzroy supporters and our club. Interesting in light of this thread.

Back in the day when you could still sit on the grass bank at the city end of the ground and watch the game without having to stand up. It was good to be there.

North Melbourne offered to merge with Fitzroy at the death, including adopting the colours or the logo. This would have kept Fitzroy alive and allowed two neighbouring clubs with small supporter bases become something bigger.

In an act of bastardry the league instead 'merged' them with a club thousands of kilometres away.

I think there was a patch of grass in front of the bar at the southern end, wasn't there? I'm sure I slipped over on it...

and I was there the day of the Fitzroy game, in the 3 tier stand, just around enough to see the piper. Amazing moment... I was still new to AFL really and wasn't totally up to speed on the history of the game, but the sad demise of the Roys and the contrast between their last Melbourne game and the way Freo treated them was all too stark.

I can't remember. Then again I did enjoy a rather large lot of recreational pharmaceuticals in my 20's.

I'd let this anniversary slip from my mind, so I'm glad to be reminded of an event I'm very proud of professionally, but, more importantly, as part of a club that has embraced many important events and issues, and not just for a branding or merchandising opportunity. It makes us what we are.
One small correction: it wasn't a piper that played out The 'Roys but our gorgeous WA soprano - now A Big Star – Sara Macliver, perched up on the roof of the Roberts Road stand by herself, singing Auld Lang Syne.
And can I also acknowledge someone who hasn't got the plaudits for the event, but deserves most of them. Jenny Della-Vedova was the club's membership manager then (a tough job that needed a tough person to do it), and it was her that had the idea to give The Lions a proper send off.
I remember the meeting where she raised it well, and Jenny was very fired up in her belief we should do the right thing, and pull out all the stops.
I got to meet the lady president of the Fitzroy Football Club in Melbourne a couple of months ago, and as soon as I told her I was with Freo in '96 and worked on their last game she was almost in tears with gratitude for The Dockers. It's amazing how long and strong appreciation for what was done is still felt by footy supporters in Melbourne.

Anyway, I'll be thinking of The Pav on Sunday, but I'll happily and sadly spare a thought for The Roys as well.

I was there as well and still have two pristine Footy Records saved from the game. Like others on here I have met Fitzroy supporters who are forever grateful for the respect Freo gave their club. I believe that Freo, while not exactly flush with cash at the time, received no support from the AFL.
