TOPIC: Favourite Pavlich moment

Smelly Skater
I'm really not sure how I'll feel watching the great man run out for the last time, there's a tinge of disbelief that his time with us is over and I'm hoping that this disbelief means I'll be composed and not too forlorn. I don't post very often and I know its probably been done to death, but I just couldn't let the weekend go by without sharing my most memorable Matthew Pavlich moment.

The moment came in our first home final win over Melbourne in 2006. I had two very young children at the time which meant I had to go to the game alone. As was normal at the time, I got caught up in all the media hype and spin, this, amongst other things, contributed to me being too nervous to actually go into the ground. I mean it, I was so uptight I actually paced up and down outside the gate (crazy I know) until I heard the siren, the crowd roar and went in and took my seat.

The whole place was jumping, a seething mass of purple. I remember Melbourne settled early and got the first few goals. We looked uneasy, you could really sense Fremantle were nervous. I guess everyone, the players included, knew what this game meant to the club and I found myself contemplating the fallout should we lose. I remember thinking, we need someone to stand up, a moment, a passage of play to settle us down, maybe instil some belief.

Well I didn't have to wait too long, it must have been in the first quarter when Josh Carr hit Pavlich on a long lead. Pav marked it just outside 50 and by the time he wheeled around he was easily at 60. He looked as though he was wanting to play on or something, there was an urgency about him but I remember thinking, just kick it, go back and kick the goal. I was sitting behind the goals at the city end and I remember ran around, paused for a second then unloaded. I was sitting in a position so when he kicked I could see him between the goal posts, I vividly remember tracking the flight of the ball and the growing groundswell of cheers and as the ball approached the big sticks and sailed through for a goal, the resultant roar was deafening. That was the moment, our lynch-pin, our champion made a statement. We went on to win the game, but it was tight! I have never forgotten that night. I'm not sure why given Pav has given us so many memorable moments and performances, it's just stuck with me for some reason. What's your favourite Pavlich moment?

The goal of the ground to go 10 points up deep in the last qtr to beat Geelong . I think it was ross 1st game as coach.
His spoil late in the semi final against Geelong in Geelong that stopped a certain goal.
Too many to remember.
Great great great man.

I still rate his game against Port at the WACA in Round 17, 2000 as my favourite memory of Pav. He was only 18, playing his 12th or 13th game, in defence in the pissing rain in front of only ten or eleven thousand (our lowest-ever home crowd?).
Port weren't having a good season for some reason, but they were a strong team (Finished 7th the year before, 3rd the year after).
Pav held them out all night and played a blinder. It was one of those fabulous moments as a supporter when you realise you've got a real good one coming through. But no-one could have imagined just how good, and for how long.

I also have a favourite quote about Pav (although it wasn't actually about him - it was the writer H.S. Altham describing the cricketer C.B. Fry).
He could, alike in form and feature, have stepped out of the frieze of the Parthenon.

I remember after our first derby win in 2000 going down to Freo oval with a totally elated crowd of supporters. A taste of the future. We assembled in the South's tin shed and celebrated with a can or two. There were appearances by a few players but when the uncontracted recruit Pav appeared, the crowd spontaneously broke into a voluminous chant: "SIGN UP! SIGN UP! SIGN UP! ..."

He didn't respond directly to our request at the time, but he did sign on the line before long. It's been great.

Too many to remember. But the '12 Elimination against the Cats, when Freo was rampant, Geelong fingerpointed each other, and had 1 point in the first half. Pavlich lead the way and took the game by the scruff of the neck, kicking 3 in the first Q and 6 for the game.

Early on his career 19 I think and still a kid
We were getting beaten and he out muscled a centre half back and the crowd at Subiaco let out a collective "wow"

Mark Duffield has written a very fitting article in the Pre Game lift out today:
"The real reason Pav is a champion"

He also lists what he considers to be Pav's best five games

2 moments for me.

I his 9 goals against Carlton in Shane Parkers 200th at the MCG I was lucky enough to be there and even Carlton die Hards were in awe.

Ii. His game against North Melbourne over there where in the 3rd quarter he grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and shook to death like a newborn joey. He was awesome the best individual effort in a quarter I have seen.

Miss you Pav thanks for the memories. You will continue to succeed in all you do you are a champion.

Yup, that North Melbourne one. Also the prelim against Sydney in 2005 where he almost got us across the line, only to be cruelly denied by some shoddy umpiring calls. We would have won that year, given the lousy quality of Sydney's GF opposition.

The final quarter of the North game to drag us into finals was pure Super Pav. I will say though, I was playing my own footy when we took on the Blues in Shane Parker's 250th so I didn't get to see it till later. Every quarter break my old man would walk up to the huddle and try and talk about my game and tactics but all I kept asking was for the score in the Freo match.

To my delight we were rarely going pretty well in Melbourne and Pav was adding more and more to his tally each update. I raced home after my game ended to watch the replay of Pav's work and just sat there in a rare moment of knowing how the game turns out and being able to admire the great man at work without the worry and panic of being a supporter putting everything on his team. It was incredible watching him dominate the entire game so assuredly, making sure Shane got what he deserved.

If there's any game I'd want the players to go over before Sunday, it'd be that match. Pav put on a clinic in how to play for your mate who has given you and the club so much. I want to see that again to finish the season and the great man's career.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Yep Quasi, that effort against the roos was outstanding, and ranks among the all time great individual performances.
