TOPIC: Ross the Quack

The Prince Ross the Quack 7 years 4 months ago #1

The Prince
Dockerlanders will have to accept I have some authority on this matter...

It galls me that the coach, who is not qualified to involve himself in the treatment of player's injuries, directs their medical management when it suits him.

As an example, no doctor in their right mind would have recommended Fyfe fly to Melbourne to have a plate put on his fibula. It is such a routine procedure and flying him out for it is akin to sending your Ferrari to Melbourne to have a tyre changed. Ross is under the influence of a surgical Svengali over there and, as a result, Fyfe gets exposed to the significant risks of an MRSA infection (common over there and rare in Perth, thankfully) and a DVT on the flights. In addition, the Dockers medical team have no relationship with this far flung guru, making management of any complications potentially suboptimal.

We have world class sports doctors in Perth - hands off the player's health care coach!

Fyfe probably wanted a trip to Vic. Fyfe gets what Fyfe wants...

Earlier this century, I was working in as one of the lowly support staff in the hospital that took James Hird in after his face crash at Subiaco oval.

We were all issued with a memorandum via management basically telling us to keep our place and not to hang around the ward of the "celebrity", presumably not to bother him with football banter. Fair enough.

The next day the West Australian runs a front page picture of a skull detailing all the broken parts that needed repairing in Hird's face, and later one of the hospital's media doctors appeared on that short lived TV program called Cometti with further reports showcasing the complexity of the operation - all in breach of the patients confidentiality - something which the coach of Essendon later indicated should not have been made public.

I'm assuming you never got near enough to pinch his cheek and tell him what a cute 'fella he was Chewy.

Given how things panned out, I hope the hospital boss put extra guards on all the schedule drug cabinets.

There's a story on the surgeon here: Clicky

Seems like he's pretty well regarded. Prince, I haven't met you, but on the credibility stakes, he's probably got an anonymous poster covered at this point.

There are a few assumptions and assumptions presented as facts in your post Prince, for example:

i. That the surgery is routine.
ii. That MRSA infections are common (the rate of infection was 0.35 cases per 10,000 bed days of patient care under surveillance at Epworth Richmond where the surgeon operates).
iii. That the benefits of seeing a well-regarded specialist who is across Fyfe's previous history (having performed the previous surgery) doesn't outweigh that very small risk.
iv. That none of those risks were mitigated.
v. That Roly is actually making the decision.
vi. That Roly is making that decision based on being under the influence of this surgeon.
vii. That Fyfe's management are so inept that they let their cash cow have a career-affecting surgery done in a manner that no Doctor in their right mind would recommend.
viii. That Freo's Doctors wouldn't be in touch with the surgeon.

I know you'd prefer us to accept 'you have some authority' on this, but you've basically made some pretty serious allegations of negligence against Freo's coach, medical staff, a well-respected surgeon, and Fyfe's management. Hackdorn worthy in fact.

I think Prince was making the point that little old Perth can handle a broken leg. I don't know why he thinks Lyon made the call though.

Its absurd to fly someone from Perth to Melbourne to mend a broken leg. Isn't it?

My leg. Yes. Nat Fyfe brownlow medallist and most important player freo has? No. I doubt it was as simple as a broken leg anyway, he's been injured since Mitchellgate.

I think you're all missing the point here.

Fyfe went back to the surgeon who fixed his leg the first time. Since the leg broke again, at the site of the original repair, clearly Fyfe went back as a warranty item.

Its probably covered for 24 months or 250 ks

No idea hypen. Fyfe has broken the same leg twice, and missed an entire year of football. The consequences for getting it wrong a pretty great - not least for the people making the decision. You would expect there to be a few voices in the room, and it seems pretty unlikely that Roly's voice would trump - on Prince's view - every other doctor in the world.

Given Fyfe re-injured the same leg, I'd be inclined to give another bloke a go, and probably a local. But given only 11% of AFL players are based in Perth, perhaps a bloke in Melbourne has developed some experience that locals don't have.

All I know is that if I were Roly, i'd be pretty motivated to make sure that Fyfe had the best treatment possible, if only based on rank self-interest. I probably wouldn't want to overrule my medical staff on these matters if I wanted to keep my job.

But, a guy on the internet has some authority on this, so.....

I think the evidence on the effectiveness of flying players to Melbourne to have surgery speaks for itself.

I reckon The Prince is just drumming up some business. I had my acl done and three goes on my spine here in good old WA - top job, all four ops. I'll give Prince a go next time I need some work done, just because he's a Dockerlander. Same thing with Morgan - my next divorce is going to land on his desk. You gotta support your mates after all.

I had a hip operation back in 2010. The doctor I saw for it was one of the Freo club doctors, he referred me to a surgeon in Melbourne for the procedure who worked on a lot of footballers.. Gotta say I haven't had any issues with my hip post op. Have had my right knee done twice in the past 12 months, the 2nd time by the surgeon who did hasleby's reco here in perth. hoping that my knee comes good this time round.

Point being is sometimes its the perth doctors who do the analysis who will recommend surgeons over east or surgeons locally. Players have even been sent over seas for some procedures.

Corporal Agarn
Polly, just don't get into a discussion with him about the merits of Bondy's draft selections particularly if you're going to court.
