TOPIC: Clarko the Professional On the Couch

demo1 Clarko the Professional On the Couch 8 years 6 months ago #1

Not only did he ensure players trained on the same dimensions as Subiaco Oval for our prelim he also ensured all his players wore the correct footwear (ie long stops).
He thinks Subi is the worst surface in the league.
He knows that Subiaco has a weed and turf disease and even named id (started with a P).
He knows that our players slip all over alot and mentioned Ballas for one.
He didnt want his players slipping over in a big game. I know quite a few of ours did.
Ross is known as getting his way but he has admitted he cant get some players to change their boots - surely this proves that the coach should get what he wants

Yep. It's the one percenters that make all the difference. If RTB can't tell players which boots are to be worn, there is a bigger problem going on within the club than most people think. Sheesh, "It's long stops today boys" .......move on, next issue.

I would have thought a genius smartarse should have just beaten the Slime in the Qualifying final and played their Preliminary Final at the MCG.

Just saw the interview as had it recorded.
Clarkson is just what I thought he was. Someone who prepares down to the nth degree.
The Hawks do all the one percenters better than everybody.

Rewatched our prelim (couldn't bring myself to watch the recording after the live match until now). I noticed how Hawthorn come back from their mark without leaving the line so the ump never calls play on. Then, they decide which way they go, THEN they move off the mark, play on and deliver.

We on the other hand continually backed away off the mark off the line so the ump called play on BEFORE we had decided which way we were going. This placed stacks of pressure on us.

This is called coaching one percenters and Roly is still the apprentice to Clarko.

That's one point. The Ballantyne slipping over is a second point. Ive got another 98 of these one percenters and Im damn frustrated!! In fact one day I might start up a list or the Dockerlanders should. 100 one percenters that Freo don't do. Anyway to send it to Roly, Shane???

That's all well and good but I want to know how he got the umps onside.
That was worth way more than any 1%er.

Clarko regularly invites the umps into the players changerooms for meet and greet sessions.
Hodgey and The Corker are always whispering sweet nothings into their ears, a little pat on the bum here and there.

When they get an obvious smash to the head, Hodge gets up like he didn't get hit. The umps think "Wow that guy is tough". Then when it isn't really there (ala the first quarter and Sutcliffe was barely touching him) he throws his head back and arms flail in the air. The umps think "Its Hodgey, hes tough as nails and never fakes" so they blow the whistle.

Theres a dozen ways to get the umps on side and Clarko and his little band of merry men are the experts (along with the Duckers at West Coast). Another one percenter for Roly to brush up on.

Rufus, right on the money there.
One other thing: I read a while ago how the Hawks had visited an NFL team. Now, before you go saying that the games are different and there's not much to learn from them, probably one of the most prominent things NFL teams emphasise is penalties. Don't give away penalties.

I noticed in our PF when Gibson gave away the free kick to Mayne, Son Son came over and gave Gibson an earful and a bit of a push. Why? It wasn't a malicious tackle, Gibson got pinged for the free kick, and from my eyes, the only thing that could have happened is the ump would reverse the decision if it escalated. Perhaps Son Son was trying to get Gibson to retaliate and give up the 50 m penalty. But, it's dicey because the decision could go the other way. Similarly, in the PF, when Cyril goaled after Sheridan's dropped mark, there wasn't much rubbing it in; by any of the Hawks players.

From what I saw, I think the Hawks have taken discipline to pretty high level. <Notwithstanding the elbow by Hodge to Wingard, but Hodge's story is the goal got in the way>

blah blah blah.

What about their cheating? Natural arcs, unsociable football, 10m kicks and staging for frees (all paid regularly).
