I have always said that luck can play a huge part in your life. This article is one that sums things up well.

when you're good enough, you take the vagaries of luck out of the equation.

Gary Player was once accused of being lucky, having won in more countries than any other player. He agreed. "The harder I work, the luckier I get."

We're not good enough - no matter how much effort we put in. Lyon knows that. All year I've never seen a less convincing minor premier team than ours. He put all those ugly scrappy wins down to his "blue collar" euphemism. The simple fact is, grunt can't trumps skills.

Ant that's my point.

You look at our 22 v Hawthorn's 22. The first 14 or so are roughly the same then we drop off dramatically while Hawthorn remain quite strong and don't drop off until the late teens.

Ross did a remarkable job to get us to top spot with that list and to get us so close to another GF was nothing short of remarkable.

One of the main reasons they drafted Weller last year was because of his elite kicking skills. No doubt that is why they will go hard for Bennell.

The reality is that in big games our skills aren't good enough. You wouldn't want Mayne, Barlow, D Pearce or De Boer (to name a few) kicking for your life let alone to win a tight final.

Whilst that is true, Hawks have better "luck", being a Vic club, better recruiters with a desirable destination, better forwar coaches which equals a better 22. Add to that favoritism amongst officials, more protected players & a Vic-centric AFL Commission it's s bloody wonder we finished top or even had a home prelim.
A budgie acquaintance who was looking forward to WA Derby GF is convinced the AFL worked against us. She's a nice lass & not as bad as the rest of 'em & goes for the WA teams. Won't change her allegiance because Budgies were first.
Talk about bad luck, that's it right there. Freo should've been formed earlier.

"Success has many fathers but failure is an orphan..."
We are all orphans with Ross he's not alone. Was it bad luck that the Awfl gifted us that umpiring trio on Friday?

See - this is the problem we have as fans in being taken seriously about the officials.

We fell one game short of a GF. It was painful watching us get there, and we did so despite a game plan that makes bad or biased umpiring a factor. Plus the constant travel, and the rigged tassie fixture, against...guess who?

Our cattle is light on. Our game plan is taxing and tries to make up for skill and personnel deficiencies. We have issues with umpiring. With that formula, on paper you'd wonder how they could make the 4. We will retire players next year. It will be harder still.

Agree, and that's why I am glad we have Ross as coach. We are not blessed with the skills of sides like the Hawks and Ross has squeezed every drop of whatever other attributes our players do possess.
My one criticism is that though, I hope, he relates well to the players behind closed doors, publically he appears to me to be very distant from them. Might have missed it, but I did not see him out on the ground after Friday's game and I felt that would have warmed the players - and the supporters.

He gave Tommy Sheridan a hug after the game. He's close enough...

Enjoyed the article but I have to reiterate what Dockerplus said, was it just bad luck getting that umpiring trio while very next night the free kicks are 18-9 in favour of the slime in Q3 with 15mins to go

WE ARE GOOD ENOUGH
WE ARE THE MINOR PREMIERS
WE WERE AMBUSHED BY THE CONSTABULARY (before a shot was fired)

Maybe the awfl perceive a bunch of cashed up Slime supporters who didnt have airfares yet, would be more leachworthy
than us who had airfares months ago at reasonable prices

I wouldn't be betting we'd get much of a better outcome with different umpires.

We'd be a shoe-in if we got the same free kick differential as the Slime do and when it matters most ie to get soft goals and to turn momentum.

The umpiring is problematic and we do get the raw deal more than seems Justified. However, we've been defined as a defensive team, and the man who is being attacked by the docker is often the one who gets the benefit of the doubt so it seems. the only way t see out of this injustice is become known as the team who attacks and moves the ball.
it does suck the big red one and we have the stuff and team to win a GF but not with primarily defensive approach. This will give the umpires no where to limit or stifle our play.
